"We love Keperra!"

Keperra has evolved before my very eyes, I grew up very close by and have enjoyed the local Golf Course for many years. The local Bunnings is the largest in Qld so we're definitely on the map.

"Keperra Suburb Review"

Keperra is located just 10km to the Brisbane CBD and has a blend of character & modern homes. You'll find a large range of shops & services at the nearby Great Western Super Centre with Brookside & Blackwood St precinct all just minutes away. Keperra and Grovely train stations service the suburb alongside Brisbane City Council buses. With an abundance of parkland and Enoggera reservoir nearby, walk or cycle the Kedron Brook bike path for leisure or your commute, there is plenty to explore!

"Quiet family friendly suburb"

Recently moved to Keperra and we find it quiet and enjoyable. Houses are being renovated near us, close to the train station so definitely an up-and-coming suburb. Plenty of nice couples who walk their dogs on our street and we see lots of young families about too.

The Woolies and Bunnings precinct is very convenient and so close. Drive into the city is easy also, with two options - via The Gap or through Mitchelton - depending on peak our traffic.

"Leafy, wide streets, convenient."

I've lived here since 2001, it's 2020 now and I like it just as much as I did then. I am sad to see some of the old blocks get split, it leaves so little yard space. Luckily Keperra has quite a few parks and the golf course for green spaces. I live in between Keperra and Ferny Grove train stations and I can't fault the service we have here with public transport. There are still many retired and older pensioners living here but we are also seeing a rise in young families moving in. Crampton a social cafe up at Dallas parade shops is great as is the Picabeen community op shop. So many great small businesses and the Great Western shops do a fair trade. Bunnings has moved in so we must be doing alright :)
At the moment I'm enjoying listening to the bird life and watching some golfers play on the course. I love it here!

"Quiet, Friendly, Close to Shops and City"

Keperra is definitely on the rise, property prices just keep rising rapidly. Many brand new builds going up as the blocks are flat and large - plenty of room for dogs and kids. Many renovations being undertaken as well. The friendliest neighbours I've had, people help out with garden/renovations, invitations for BBQs etc - really great. 2 of my neighbours are housing commission, but again they are great. The 2 local butchers are both great and cheap fruit and veg at the supafruita, and very close to Mitchelton and Ferny Grove Markets. There is a new cafe at the Dawson Parade and a bulk billing medical practice. Plenty of schools nearby.

Keperra is very quiet and peaceful and has many parks. After living in Mitchelton previously I prefer Keperra. The Great Western shopping centre has everything you could want including a large First Choice Liquor. It is very close to Brookeside centre at Mitchelton or Arana Hills Plaza for even more shops.

Proximity to the city is a big plus - main roads are great when compared with Stafford or Everton Park areas which is highly congested (no trains). Frequent train services (every 15 minutes) will get you to the city in just over 20min and you will get a seat unlike further down the line.

Keperra has Cable internet which is extremely fast (the same as NBN) - a major selling point for everyone being connected to the internet nowadays. Town gas is also a plus, no more pesky cylinder re-fills!

Bought my land off the Government which seems to be a trend for this suburb. Happy to be a home owner here - don't want to couped up in the oversupply of town houses/units in neighbouring suburbs!

Great for

  • Convenient basic shopping
  • Close to a good golf course
  • Green and leafy
  • Quiet and safe
  • Great local schools

"Convenient, pretty and friendly"

To be honest when I bought my house in Keperra two years ago I was a little apprehensive because people had told me it used to be a bad neighbourhood once upon a time. Since living here I am pleased to say I made the best decision moving here. I have lived in other suburbs in Brisbane very close to city as well as those surrounding Keperra like Mitchelton and Gaythorne. When moving here I was surprised by how quiet the suburb is. I've never had any trouble. I do live next to housing commission, but in the two years I've been here I have noticed a lot of these houses are being sold and bought by young couples looking to renovate and start a family. I must say that my housing commission neighbours are in fact the best neighbours I've ever had - genuinely nice (even help me renovate part of my house) but get a bad rep because they look rough around the edges. They keep their house better maintained than I do mine!

I think Keperra ticks a lot of boxes. Its one of the safest places I've lived. When I lived in Mitchelton there were break-ins around my area all the time.

Transport
In live very close to the Keperra train station which is fantastic. I used to live at Kelvin Grove and my commute to work in the city is easier from Keperra than Kelvin Grove. The trains now come every 15 minutes, are clean and have wifi which is great. I still think the train station needs a facelift though.

My husband works around near the docks, so drives to work. Its an easy 20 minute drive. Of course there is some traffic, but there is traffic everywhere. There is no escaping it in a city. Try living in Bangkok.

Parks
I love the amount of decent parks in Keperra. I live one street away from a park and playground which is great for the kids. Plus there are two bigger parks 10 minutes walk. I frequently use the dog park too. I noticed a previous poster some time ago mentioned issues with his rotweiller. This is BS to say the least. I have a rottweiller too. Everyone has been super friendly to me and I haven't had one issue.

Houses and blocks
Honestly one of the reasons why I moved here was it was the only house I could find 10km from the city that was within my budget. I refused to buy an apartment or a house on a tiny block without any room for kids and a dog. I also like the fact its established with nice big jacarandas lining a lot of the streets. It really is a pretty area. It certainly beats new estates like north lakes.

I bought my house off the Govt, so yes it is an ex-commission place. Now that I've got past the stigma I realise I got a bargain because once you do a few cosmetic renos it looks like any other place. The tradies that came to the place when I first bought it to do odd jobs were always impressed with the condition of the place and how well built it was compared to similar age houses too. One thing to remember is there is commission housing everywhere no matter what suburb you live in, even in the more expensive suburbs like Paddington.

I do think Keperra still has a way to go though but I don't think its as far as a decade away. The train station seems to have been left off the list for stations to be upgraded and more paths would be good too. I also think the dallas parade local shops could be improved a bit. A coffee shop would be nice. I also think the rehabilitation and development of the old quarry behind the great western shopping centre would go a long way.

Great for

  • Convenient basic shopping
  • Close to a good golf course
  • Green and leafy
  • Quiet and safe
  • Great local schools

Not great for

  • Could be improved with more footpaths

Yes, Keperra station is the ugly duckling. Oxford Park, Grovely and Ferny Grove have all had their makeovers but Keperra just got left behind. Mind you, the duplication of the track from Mitchelton to Ferny has been beneficial. If you lived here before that happened and, caught the train on a regular basis, you'd know why! Plus, the general upgrade at Ferny Grove station has been really good (shame about the poky tavern though).

"An up and coming suburb"

12 months ago we purchased a block of land in Keperra to undertake a knock-down rebuild. We had been looking in Mitchelton/Gaythorne and found that you would be easily paying an extra $50k-$100k for the same style/size block.

We made the move from Warner so that we could be closer to the city - our new block has put us within the all important 10km radius of the CBD. Below are just a few of my observations of the suburb.

Traffic/Transport
Keperra has two train stations that service it - Keperra and Grovely, both relatively central to the suburb. The line has been recently duplicated and the government has announced that the Ferny Grove line will be getting 15 min services - so there are plenty of trains! Typical trip from Central to Grovely is about 23-25 minutes - not too shabby.

Yes Samford road is busy during peak hour - however no worse than any other road in Brisbane. If you car pool, you can quite easily get into the CBD in 20-30 minutes if you take the T2 lane via Waterworks road. During school holidays we have even had runs of 15 minutes! So those that complain about traffic - I suggest that you try commuting from Warner and see how long that takes you.

The airport link tunnel has made the process of getting to the Gateway motorway/airport a breeze!

Only real bug bear I have with Keperra is Dawson Parade. Sometime the rail crossing can get backed-up and can take a while to clear.

Shopping/Dining
So many shopping options in and around Keperra its fantastic. You've got the Great Western complex to the West, that has a Woolworths, Aldi, Supercheap to name a few. To the North in Arana Hills you've got a Coles and a Kmart and to the East, you've got Brookside which is one of the few centres on the Northside that has a Myer! All easily accessible and plenty of parking. Dining wise, Keperra has some nice boutique cafes and coffee shops that are popping up, your regular pub style meals and slowly you are seeing small restaurants emerging (like Thai @ Grovely). If you are a fast food lover, all the major chains are there.

Housing/Properties
Keperra properties are very typical of post WW2 home - small weatherboard homes on blocks ranging from 600m2 to 800m2. Most house are in reasonable condition and can be easily updated/renovated quite cheaply. I love established areas like Keperra, as unlike new developments such as Northlakes - you actually have some space between you and your neighbour!. Advantage of Keperra over suburbs like Mitchelton/Gaythorne is that you can possibly pick up a bargain and undertake a knock-down rebuild like we did. As stated by a previous review, the Campbell government is going through the area and selling many of the housing commission properties which have given the suburb a bit of a bad name.

Schools/Childcare
I don't have children, so cannot really comment - however it seems there are plenty of options, with Grovely State School, Mitchelton High and St William Catholic.

Parks/Recreation
Plenty of green open spaces in Keperra to enjoy - even a leash free area for the 4 legged member of the family. You've got the Keperra Golf club which is quite a reasonable course

Keperra is definitely an up an coming suburb - its not quite there yet, but will be a hot commodity in 5-7 years time. Pick up a bargain now before the rest of Brisbane realises that this leafy gem to the North West exists

Great for

  • Great public transport options
  • Significantly cheaper than comparable suburbs like Mitchelton
  • Convenient basic shopping
  • Close to a good golf course
  • Green and leafy
  • Quiet and safe
  • Great local schools

Not great for

  • Peak hour traffic on Samford Road
  • Has its good and bad parts

"Nice parks, the brook is cool and close to shops and transport"

I moved here after ten years of living very inner city (i.e. West End, Highgate Hill Greenslopes) I was tentative at first but after 2.5 years here I really like the place. Weekend are great as we can drive to the Ironbark Gully bushland to walk the dog and mountain bike - it’s only five minutes drive away. Samford is under 15 minutes and we often go for a spin out that way on the weekend. I can drive to multiple shops (Coles, Woolies and Aldi) in five minutes. Being so close to the train is great, it’s reliable and much better than the bus! A new airport direct bus is starting up in July - from Brookside shopping centre to the airport - pretty handy! We usually take the train to work - however on the occasions that we drive it’s a relatively quick trip - especially if you can use the T2 lane. The suburb is old, however more young couples are moving in and renovating houses, planting tress etc. I think in five to ten it’ll be a great place for young families.

Great for

  • Train line reliable
  • Convenient basic shopping
  • Close to a good golf course
  • Green and leafy
  • Quiet and safe

Not great for

  • Has its good and bad parts

"A Rising Star, Keperra is a Wonderful Place to Live"

Keperra is a wonderful place to live with huge potential. We live within close proximity to three shopping centres, there are heaps of walking tracks, bikeways, a golf course, schools and the state forest behind Samford Valley and toward Mt Glorious or Dayboro are only a short drive away. Keperra is very reasonably priced for where it is situated with so many amenities a short drive or walk away. The western corridor of Brisbane doesn’t currently have the road infrastructure of the south or north, or as many cafe and restaurant options because it is less populated. This is a good thing, because when the roads are finally upgraded (which is gradually happening) there will not be the same problems currently being experienced on the major arteries of the South and North. The council has been busy building footpaths, roundabouts, new traffic signals and some intersections, but these things take time. I often drive to work in the city and it only takes around 20-25 minutes in the middle of peak hour, if you can use the T2 lane (through the Gap). It has never taken me 50 minutes to get to town; however it’s impossible to avoid peak hour traffic anywhere in inner city Brisbane. A new tunnel at the end of Stafford Road will make the trip to the airport even quicker, and there is an intersection upgrade happening at Wardell and Samford Roads. The Ferny Grove train line has been upgraded numerous times over the last few months and a new carpark is being built at Ferny Grove Station, the train line is a major plus of Keperra. Soon, nearly all trains will have Wifi and are also being refit. It is rare to find a suburb that doesn’t have at least some drawbacks or 'good' and 'bad' tenants (try Bardon or Ashgrove that are three times the price) and I would say the drawbacks with Keperra are that its potential has not been completely realised. If you can get a place that is close to this many amenities, under 25 mins from the city, with trains, shopping centres, parks, great schools and only a short drive from the scenic areas west of Brisbane – go for it!

Great for

  • Close to shopping centres
  • Heaps of green spaces, walking and bike tracks
  • Easy to get to the city on the train
  • Green and leafy
  • Great local schools

Not great for

  • Only a few restaurants and cafes
  • Road infrastructure works would be an improvement
  • The Grovely TAFE is fairly pointless

"Quiet, safe and friendly suburb"

My husband and I lived in Keperra for 5 years and only left due to my husband being relocated with work. We found Keperra to be a great place to live. Our house was only a 5 min walk to the train station which enabled my husband to be at his work place in the city within 30 min. Coles and Kmart is located within walking distance, along with mcdonalds, KFC and a variety of other take away shops (Thai, Chinese, pizza etc). I was a member of Arana Club gym which again was only a 15min walk from our house. My sister lives on the Sunshine Coast so we visited her often, the trip in total took less than an hour to get to and was an easy drive. Our neighbors were lovely, the street we lived in was quiet and very pretty. Many houses were beginning to be renovated whilst we were there. The local hairdresser was fantastic, I miss her sooo much! Also close by at the local Keperra shops is a news agents, small supermarket, chemist - everything you need on a daily basis. I would move back to Keperra without any hesitation....

"Lets be honest"

It's a great place to live especially if you have growing children. My children have been able to walk to school from day one and now that they are teenagers, they are able to get around almost exclusively without help from me. The two train stations in the suburb are walking distance from almost anywhere and the city is 25 min stopping all stations. The easterly end of the suburb is the most convenient place to live but it is also the older part with fewer large homes. Growth has been good over the past 12 years if you own a home in the right area. My house, for instance, i purchased in 2000 for $165k and even in this downturn would still sell for $420k which is 154% and I haven't renovated. If you renovate an older home at the eastern side of the suburb you will live in the most convenient place and do very well with capital growth (in the long run, probably better than the 90's brick and tile on the other side).
I have lived here for 12 years and, yes, there is a growing traffic problem with Samford road but this effects everyone in the north west, not just Keperra residents. If you are worried about traffic, you are still better off at Keperra than Everton Park or most of the northern suburbs for that matter. To compare transit times to the city with transit times from Logan, as one user has done, is somewhat ridiculous. Outside of peak hour traffic, Spring Hill is 13 minutes. It takes ten minutes to get from Logan Central to Springwood! I drive all over Brisbane and SEQ for work and during peak hour traffic, nowhere is good, the Pacific Motor-way is absolute Hell and when its bad can literally be a car-park for up to an hour at a time.
One user made a comment about it being a 'bugger of a place if you want to get to the Airport...Unless you are used to living at Clayfeild, this is nonsense. The Airport is reliably 25 minutes away.
Another user made the comment that the suburb is over priced, this is also nonsense. Keperra is almost $100k cheaper than Mitchelton for the same type of property. The reason for this is simply the Housing commission stigma which remains attached to Keperra regardless of the fact that it's really no longer a problem. For these reasons, keperra represents excellent value because it has to catch up to the prices of surrounding suburbs which, of course, is inevitable in the near future. If you are a young couple planning to have children or already have children and don't have $600 000 for a house, buy in Keperra now or weep when you see the price in 2-5 years.
There will always be negative people who, undeterred by facts, will run something down because it doesn't suit them. If you have a positive outlook, Keperra is the place for you. If you like Logan, move to Logan. (not having a go at you OLLYGT but peak hour is peak hour and thats part of living in the inner suburbs regardless of which side of town you live)

He gave 4 stars under shopping options, baha ha, at Victoria Point which has 5 times the shopping options, he gave 1 star, this is just a bias review, do yourself a favour, go and drive around in peak hour, try to park at the small shopping mall in Keperra and try talking to a few of the locals, and peak hour at this place is like pulling teeth, you will have to drive to Ferny to get a seat on the train and the values and prices are still coming down which is why erevyoe is so toughy about anyone writtig the truth about this area. Thise who do love it, could not care less because they dont want anymorem people coming in and adding to the congestion, this person is trying to sell a house, plain and simple. Do the leg work yourself, dont get sucked in by reviews, they are there to highlight personal experiences so you can keepm it in mind, they are done mostly by bias people moving out and very few people do it from an investment style approach without emotion, those that do tell it how it is, get attacked. See for yourself.

golfers

Well not really. the reason i think shopping at victoria point is not as good as keperra is convenience and proximity. in the time it takes to get form victoria point itself to the shopping centre at redland bay road, you could get from keperra to any number of suburbs with any number of shops but, hell, i didn't know this was a competition between the two.
secondly, if you ask the locals who have actually been to the shops you will find that there is actually an excess of parking at both the great western shops and the arana hills shops. the carpark directly outside the front door of both centres is usually busy but the remaining ACRES of carpark has plenty of space at the great western and is virtually unused at arana hills. You can't have been shopping at either place. strange indeed. No one has actually attacked you at all, just disagreed, and thats enough to send you into a frenzy. Just read your own profile.

Ollygt

Peak hour in the suburbs in the south and east at the same distance from the city centre are never as bad consistantly as here in the west. Purely due to very few arterials and surburban streets turned roads well outside their design capacity. Are suburbs around this area classified as inner suburbs? We might just be outside that area.

golfers

that might be true but not Logan. I am loosely applying the label of inner suburbs to the suburbs which belong to the Brisbane city Shire, which I think is fair enough given the size of greater brisbane.
Even though there is a total lack of Motorways and the like, you also have to remember that there is nothing much further out from ferny grove besides Samford. Go 9 kms south east and there is still the rest of the south east behind you.
Tuesday this week, I left home at 6.45 am and was on the riverside expressway heading south at 7.13 am. Keperra is about 9 kms from the city.
Wednesday last week, I left Cannon Hill at 6.50 am and was on Coronation Drive heading west at 7.20 am. Cannon hill is about 7.5 kms from the city. But, If you choose to leave either place at 8 am you are in for an extra 10 to 15 minutes.
I know the traffic can be bad but it is overstated by some people.

broodon

blahdeeblah you have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what your saying! You had a 2 week trial in a place and you think you know everything about it???? We moved from Sydney to Keperra and always comment on how friendly people are here. I think people shouldn't read your reviews as they are simply not true.

I am moving to Brisbane from Sydney and am looking for a good suburb for a family. Keperra seems to fit my bill however am concerned about the school for my daughter. How is Grovely state school? Naplan results are not very positive, however these results do not depict the real quality of school. Are there any other state schools in Keperra?
I will be taking public transport to QUT, gardens point. Appreciate your suggestions..

I recommend Ferny Grove state school or St Williams School....or Patrick's Road.
You will love it here.....not saying anything is wrong with Grovely but that's my recommendation.
A good reason is that Ferny grove High is great and so naturally all your kids friends will go there... all of this is within just a km or so. I also studied at QUT and live right near the train station. You won't regret it whatever you choose. I am originally from down your way and all I can say is.... welcome to a better life!

my boy goes to grovely, all I can say is we ADORE the principal! She's goes to rediculous lengths to help everybody out and know the student personally. Yes, the school struggles with behavior but that's what you get in this sort of area with the low-socio demographic. WE love it though, and it definitely suits our family and my boy is just loving prep. Also I would highly recomend patricks road state school if you have a car.

"A suburb of Brisbane"

I agree with ihatetraffic, having sold at a loss and enduring the mamoth task of co-ordinating the whole family around getting to and from work, it just got too much.
No one else to blame for paying too much, but I would do things differently now in hindsight. There are trains close by but anyone who has to use them would be able to tell you that it is no fun pushing and shoving for a seat or to get on them.
The suburb is lovely on weekends, the parks are nice, the shopping centre is clean and there is a petrol station open at convenient hours, unfortunately for us the Monday to Friday took so much out of us that by the time the weekend rolled around we were exhausted.
It was a struggle for us to find a daycare with vacancies and at one stage we had 2 children in 2 different daycare centres.
It is not such a bad idea to spend sometime in an area before committing to buy if you are not familiar with all the pro's and con's, a lesson learnt.
I certainly will be scrutinising a lot more in the future before I sign on the dotted line anywhere regardless of what anyone else has to say.

Sorry to hear your bad experience with this suburb, it is always stressful when someone loses money on a home. Hopefully where ever you have gone to now will give you more family time and you have better luck with your next house. I hope you dont end up subjected to any ridicul for your review, it sounds like you have had a hard enough time of late as is. All the best.

you have rated the suburb according to your own mistakes. almost all of the negatives you have described have nothing to do with the suburb and everything to do with your personal situation. illogical. I guess thats why you have found support from the hater.

"Two sides to Keperra"

Keperra has two distinct sides separated by Samford road. The Northern part and the Southern Part, the Northern part has a higher level of Army housing and housing commission, the Southern Part does not and is newer by a good few decades. You only have to drive through each area to get a feel. Despite its distance to the city you will not get a quick commute and the Ferny Grove train line is pretty poor but they are doing upgrades. The problem with the roads is that there is no good major arterial you are stuck using Samford road or going through The Gap using Waterworks or going through The Gap then paddington. Expect commute times of 40minutes during weekdays, when schools are in, to the city which is what people commuting from Logan to Brisbane get. It is a lovely leafy area and family friendly, the house styles and land block sizes do keep the prices down and you're close to Michelton for Brookside and Kmart Plaza, the gap village and the Great Western shopping centre is only a short distance for general shopping, it's also not that long a drive to Stafford for Bunnings or Stafford City. Its close to the refuse and recycling centre and it can't really get built out.

This is otherwise a very fair assessment but can i just say that there is no Army housing in the old part (northern side of Samford road). Quite a few of the Housing Commission houses(post war) that remain in that area are, in fact, ex-Army housing from the 50's and 60's. The only housing in Keperra which is currently owned by DHA is in 'Kings Grove' , (built around 2001) which is the site of the old drive in, and a quite few still in 'Kings Park' (90's) right next door. Both of these are on the southern side of Samford road and really are separated from the convenience of the train station, parks and so forth. Newer, nicer house to live in but nowhere near as good location wise.

Um, yes there is DHA housing there, and housing commission is housing commission my friend, regardless of what it started out as. Shame you cant post photos up here, I have some shocking ones of this suburb I took when I was there, no matter, you can go and see for yourself what the bottom end of toen looks like at the bottom of Keperra

golfers

You are wrong. Read my comment again because you have misread it. there is no army housing on the northern side of samford road. Army housing is on the southern side of the road in the newer areas i mentioned. there is only housing commission on the northern side of samford road not army housing...yes once apon a time some of this housing commisssion used to be army housing but a long time ago. DHA has strict stipulations as to the type of housing they buy or lease back. No one said that there is no housing commission. Reading and comprehension my friend, reading and comprehension.

"After staying for 2 weeks as a trial, we are glad we did not buy here"

Keppera is about 13 kilometres from the CBD, there are a lot of developments still going up as well as at finalisation stage. There is a mid size shopping centre at the bottom of the hillside development which has all your basics and a few boutique shops.

House prices are still coming back to reality, they have been declining since 2008, this trend is not expected to change anytime soon. The traffic in peak hour is bad, you need to be out the door before 7am and it will take you 30 minutes to the city, if you leave after 7.30am then you will need to factor in 50 minutes, you will go through a lot of school zones as well on the only routes into the city and this can really slow things down as well seeing there is no choice and it is unavoidable.

The houses are smallish blocks on average, most are built on a slope so a lot of the the 5-9 year old houses are spilt level, few blocks get full use of their yards and front yards, no fun trying to get out of your car on a sloping driveway with kids and shopping so you will need a garage you can pull into, which means you will need a shed somewhere for all your lawn gear, tools etc your garage will be a no go zone for storage.

I know it is close to the city as the crow flys, but the reality is that unless you are planning to go into the city only on weekends you will still end up in traffic and 30-50 minutes sitting in traffic is bad and would definitely be a factor for me or for most people with a young family who would rather spend time with them rather than sitting in traffic.

A bugger of a place if you need to get to the airport in a hurry.

Good for golfers and nice parks with an off leash park for dogs, a few visits to this park though made it clear not all dog breeds were welcome, majority are small lap dogs. !2 year old Rotty with Arthritis was not welcome, the poor bugger couldn't even run and he was sneered at.

Schools are OK, no fun to get to though, factor in an extra 20 minutes if you are not close enough to walk, one of them is surrounded by main roads, personally, that would concern me, but the standards seem better than a lot of state schools in the area, there are private schools around, but none you could walk to and I would not label them as close by.

The people who live there that we spoke to ( when they would talk as most were rushed and not friendly) are mainly people who have moved from the city or city outskirts to have a family and can not afford a house in those areas and dont want to raise their family in a unit, the general conversation is about "missing paddington" or " miss walking to work" " miss the city" etc. Thats the locals there that spoke to us.

Values will hold in this area over time,a long time, once all the developments go up, bad for people who are selling houses which are not new as it is hard to compete with a new house price that is cheaper than a 4-5 year old house, and people will pay an extra $40k -$50k to get the building grant or first buyers grants as well as a new house.

It is a hike to get to the closest beach, you need to travel out of the area for househould items like whitegoods, furniture, homewares etc as there is only one small shopping mall you will struggle to park in, but you can easily check this our for yourself.

If you like going further north, then your in a good spot, there are some nice weekend spots towards Samford and the dams, but if your not into that sort of thing then you will find little else north bound.

Mostly retirees or parents who have careers, a lot of families only have one child and both parents still have their careers, lots of days cares but they are all full.

Before you buy, map out your interests, what sort of schools you want your children in, how much time you want to spend in traffic and your options for getting a train/bus as some people spend 15 minutes just to get to the train and park.

If your after a flat backyard you will be hard pressed as the whole suburb is built on hills.

Overall, a nice suburb, a bit of a traffic nightmare, small yards, decent shopping centre, well heeled above average income earners, nice looking and well maintained gardens and front lawns, respectful looking neighbourhood, just a little snobby and overpriced.

The people are very judgemental, and opinionated when it comes to what others think, we actually got asked who we voted for and when we declined to comment as most smart people know you dont discuss politics with strangers, we were questioned on this and the person got uptight about it and started making "guesses" about our personal situation.

Be careful in Keperra, people dont let you have your own opinion, maybe the day to day frustration of traffic and cramped living has taken its toll. But this is just my opinion, maybe it is not the case, check that out for yourself.

Great for

  • Good for retirees who lke to play golf
  • Close to a good golf course

Not great for

  • Judgemental people
  • Small blocks, built on a hill
  • Peak hour traffic very bad
  • Peak hour traffic on Samford Road
  • Could be improved with more footpaths

Who lives here?

  • Professionals
  • Retirees

I find the above hard to follow, overpriced it is definately not. Where else on the Northside can you get a house 12km from the city for under 400k? Snobby it is not, especially re your comment about people who cannot afford to live in Paddo.
Where is all this development at Keperra happening? I cant see any so must be a different part of Keperra in another state. School Zones? I go through one on the way to the city, if I went Samford Road I wouldnt go through any. Sloping blocks, again where are they all, sure the are some sloping blocks but most are flat and over 650m. No its not close to the airport, if you want to get there in a hurry leave enough time, you will make it fine. The area has a lot of capital works happening with the train line and roads also. Getting to the city in peak hour is the same for anyone in Brisbane given the funnel effect and poor planning, North, South East and
West. We bought a house in the estate for 530k on 900m, flat with 5 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms big yard with pool and park across the road. Whats with the lap dogs concern with the off leash area? A least there is an off leash area and if your dog is unsociable then it shouldnt be there whether it be a rottwieller or a lap dog. Im not defending the suburb because of a vested interest, I just dont want people to make decision based on the above which I can see no validity too. Your user name is Ihatetraffic - maybe Mt Isa would suit you better and there very few yuppies and lap dogs out there and traffic flows.

Simba

Couldn't agree LESS with this comment. Traffic is no worse in Keperra to City than any other suburb. Not sure where you are finding these 5-9 year old houses. Housing in Keperra is pretty much either 60's single level in the old sections or late 80's ealy 90's brick in the old drive-in. There are very few houses that have been built in the area in the last 10 years. Yes some are on sloping blocks, that part of the area. If you don't want a sloping block, you don't buy there. Lots of schools to choose from, close to three train stations (Keperra, Grovely and Ferny Grove). The shopping centre is pretty good. Will be improved when they finish it and add in the Cinemas and Bunnings. Most certainly NOT a yuppy suburb. Working class is more like it. And definitely not over priced, nor have property values been decreasing. The have been increasing for the better part of a decade, may have flattened out a bit lately (where has not??) still value for money when you consider the amenities and closeness to the city.

Cheers Simba - hit his profile, 18 comments in as many days from Wollongong to Sydney to Brisbane. He is not a yuppie but comments on housing commisions constantly...

blahdeeblah

You are very wrong, there are places advertised for sale now in Willis street and Burnet street that are 8 year old houses,Im not going to go any further than the first page on REA to hammer my point home though as I dont have all the time in the world :-) My review obviously hit a few raw nerves but was an honest reflection, I had considered buying in Keperra, and I spent a few weeks in the area to see what it was like and the review I wrote is what I found, it is my personal opinion, it seems the people here think that people dont have a right to an opinion. If you feel the need to insult people for having a point of view then maybe you should be in politics.

The FACTS are that houses are selling for a lot less than they did 2-3 years ago, not ALL suburbs are performing badly at present, but this one is as it is its turn to adjust in the market, the commute is a long and tedious one and that is a FACT.

If you have to drive to Ferny Grove to go to school and use their train then why would people not buy there? School and Transport are very important in this day and age, I actually wrote some very nice things about this suburb and all suburbs have good and bad, as for a vested interest, I don't own a property here and I wouldn't buy one for investment either, DHA means your locked in for 12 years with below average rent and if something was to go wrong you haev to sell a house with a lease that could be 12 years, great for a self managed super fund, too risky for my liking , but hey, that is just my opinion. As for buying a normal house for an investment, lets look at the facts, if you go on rental vacancies also on REA you will see the average rental price in around $400 per week for a house that is on the market for around $490k, interest only on that is approx $650p/w and $750p/w if you want to pay it off, take out agent fees 8% $38 p/w, rates $30p/w, insurance $20p/w and moderate repairs of $15p/w and that leaves you $297 towards a $650- $750 p/w mortgage, how is $450 out of pocket a good investment?

There are areas where you can buy a house for $270k and rent it out for $320p/w, an investment is based on return and growth, these are facts, this is not an area to invest in and the facts are people who have rented for the last 3-4 years in Keperra have saved a bucket of money, I know someone who owns properties elsewhere but rents in Keperra as they like the area but there is no point payig off a mortage when they can ret for half that, get their tax offsets as well and someone else pays the repairs, the person on the bad end of that stick is the owner! FACT.

I actually wrote my first review here months ago, not 18 days ago, and evry now and then when I am following the market to see what is happening and comparing it to the same time the year berfore ( I have print out of bought and sold prices for the last decade, you would have a fit if I put them up here )

This in MY opinion and I am entitled to it, it is not wise to road rage on websites, all you are portraying is that the area is full of self righteous people who blow a gasket and before vengeful and spiteful if they hear something they don't like. I would never move to an area where there was this much tension. On a whole my review was a good one, " nice but slightly overpriced" if this is how you react to this review then god help you if something ever goes wrong in your life.

Sorry I have managed to cause a mass upset , I am amazed that so many people have invested the time to be so upset and exhibit so much anger over my review. Wow.

The review above mine has a few similiar opinions to mine as well, are you going to vent out and attack them personally as well, wow, ,maybe spending all that time commuting to work, trying to park at schools, ad watching your house values dropped has set off a road rage type bahvaiour pattern that you vent out on people who have excersized their right to freedom of speech.

kaindec

Yes, you are entitled to your view. When it is factually wrong then it should be corrected. Also I didn't attack you personally, I just told you where to go.In fact your are the one who attacked countless people by stereotying people in suburbs and economic positions.

You posted 18 reviews in as many days mainly negative overall, if you did them months ago then they are showing up from the 12th Jan 2012 with references to housing commissions, the people that live in those suburbs and other inflammatory comments.People are naturally going to be offended and react so expect it.

Your an investor clearly, prices have gone down but people who plan to live in a place long term as the principal place of residence wont mind as it is a long term proposition. The term " Equity mate" went out of the window some time ago and was a bank error of judgement in hindsight.

So lets look at the Keperra review -

Traffic - Same everywhere it every city. Always going to be a point of discussion, since you have been here there has been approval for captial works to ease traffic congestion. However in reality it will still be an issue but somewhat less.

House Prices - Keperra is not Roninson Crusoe here, pricing has gone down but not by as much as other suburbs. In fact it has continuously been named a great place to buy and invest. The houses on you are discussing have hit the market overpriced and such become stagnant. Bad RE advice or unrealistic vendor expectations. Also they are not appealing houses if you had looked at them compared to other houses on the market.

Development - where is this that you are talking about. Havent seen around here in years.

Sloping block, like every suburb it has some. However most are flat and sizeable

School Zones - There a good idea as it protects the kids, but like I said I only go through one all the way to the city. Some people may hit 2. Point being there are plently of schools in the area and all got good results in th recent audit from the govt.

Transport - 3 train station with 1km and being upgraded with dual track and more parking.

No it is not close to a beach and not close to the airport. Google earth would show that.

Your roadrage comment is far fetched given your the condecending person with your views. Also your comment " I have print out of bought and sold prices for the last decade, you would have a fit if I put them up here " I wouldnt care but be careful around privacy laws, either way you can get them on the website onthehouse.com.au for free which is what I used before making an offer on the house I live in.

I hope you get enjoyment out of judging people, the area's they live in and have lots of fun rolling around in the money you will soon loose if you have any based on your analysis/reviews As you really dont know an area until you spend some time there. Either way, most people that read your reviews hatetraffic as well. Now thats road rage..

blahdeeblah

I didnt judge anybody, I posted MY opinion on a suburb, you are the one decided in your mind to convert it to a personal attack, you the one claimig I have lost money, claim to know what others think and feel and attack people for not having the same opinion as you do, then have a full blown tanti if someone calls you up on it, yawn yawn, stop being so sensitive and harping on about the same thing, Im allowed to vocie my opinion, others on here seem to agree with me and some agree with you, its called freedom of speech

blahdeeblah

How is hating traffic road rage lol, big difference between hating traffic and deciding to live in an area that doesnt have as much opposed to abusing people who right something slightly negative about your area, if you read the review, it is mostly positive, you have made a storm in a tea cup. I can oly put it down to stress from all the traffic you sit in :-)

kaindec

You say you dont judge people - below is your Woolaware review .I wont add all the housing commission comments -

Unfriendly and judgemental residents"
If you can afford to have a new BMW or live on the water then you will love this area. If you visit the local schools you will see the types of Mums picking up their kids. The ones dressed to the nines parking their new 4wd smothered in bling and the mums who have walked to the school and look like they have spent the day caring for kids and doing housework rather than directing the cleaner on what to do next.

This suburb has a big issue with what side of the fence you are on financially, kids as young as 5 are being questioned on the labels they wear and the occupations or residential status of their parents.

If you want you children to grow up level headed with good manners then I would not recommend you do do in this suburb, but if you dont mind your kids being spoilt brats who are rude to people and have no manners then you will love the attitude of the locals.

You say you do your research by driving through a suburb and other data. Living in a suburb is a lot different. Whilst your review has positives, it is also full of inaccuracies which have been pointed out several times, your constant reply is your being attached and freedom of speech.

Everyone is entitled to freedom of speech but when you start judging the people expect to have a response. Would love to know where in the few capital cities suburbs in this fine country you dont get traffic and child care vacancy issues as well as property prices are not on the decline if not bottomed out.

blahdeeblah

The reason you keep getting your comments removed by the administrators is because you are not supposed to make person attacks on peoples opinion, my opinion of the suburbs I have reviewed is based on my experience, there is also another person who made s similair review on Woolooware, do you intend to attack them as well? I did not single anyone out, call them names or attack their opinion, which is what you are contining to do, all you are doing is bringing lots of bad attention to your suburb so I really could not care less that you are having heart failure that I do not want to live their for my reasons, I saw another post from someone else who does not like it either and lost money, are you intending on attacking them as well, Seriously, you are not going to change my opinion on your suburb, get over it. If anything, your bullying behaviour confirms even more what I thought of the area.

blahdeeblah

PS. Do you know your not supposed to cut and paste other peoples comments, maybe read the terms and conditions on this website seeing you seem to not understand why your comments are continually removed and you dont learnt from your mistakes it would seem.

kaindec

I haven't made an attack on you and I have only ever responded to you. Your freedom of speech ramble works both ways. I dont know you personally to really care. Anyone that responds to you is making an personal attack in your eyes. You keep steering off the track and not answering the questions. Im not having heart failure, more getting enjoyment at giving you what you give when you generalise people into categories.

PS -PS. Do you know your not supposed to cut and paste other peoples comments, maybe read the terms and conditions on this website seeing you seem to not understand why your comments are continually removed and you dont learnt from your mistakes it would seem.

blahdeeblah

Seriosly, if you actually READ this review I wrote about Keperra, it is overall a good one, you obviously have issues with anyone voicing their opinion if you feel the need to rant and rave beacuse "I" think your suburb is "overpriced" and I might add, I am NOT the only one who feels this,I have answered myself very clearly, you ont eh other hand, have not! Are you going to go around attacking EVERYONE who who does not think Keperra is good value OR who thinks the infrastructure is too bad to cope? I see another reviewer here who seems to have a similair view to me? Are you intending on attacking "fitzy88" as well? Or are you just singlig me out in a bully style stalking manner because as you have put it , it seems to give you enjoyment. As for "giving" me it. What the! Tell me, how long has your house been on the market, not since june last year I hope.

blahdeeblah

Where on ewaerth in the Keperra review I wrote is there anything about housing commission anyway, seems you think you have the right to judge people without even having a clue about the area they live in. I suppose you support the cronulla riots as well, that suburb adjoins Wollooware, and I am entitled to have MY opinion on what "some" people in the area are like. For example, you seem very argumentative, I wouldnn't want a neighbour who banged on and on and god forbid there was a fence issue lol.
too funny, you have a good day and Im sorry that this pretty good review I wrote about Keperra has offended you to the extent that you HAVE been on a personal attack to the point you have invested so much time reading ALL my reviews and then commebnting on each and everyone, of course your multipostinngs and abuse have been removed by the administrators, but Im sure they wont be the last comments of yours removed. I actually realise that there ios no gettig through to some people so I will leave you to it, no doubt your the sort of person who likes the last word so I can guarantee when i get back from my weekend away I will no doubt see that you have once again had something else to say on this topic which I am sure by now is boring everyone, including me. Im off for a good weekend, could not care less what you decide to do with, sit here and type abuse till your hearts content, I wont be reading it :-)

kaindec

I stopped reading yout comment when your went on about being attacked, your entitled to your opinion yes. But when the facts are not correct then people have the right of reply. Are you saying that no one should reply to your comments unless they agree without you grabbing your tissues. Im sure you will take that as an attack. Re-read you reviews on the 20 suburbs you have done in 20 days and see where you have made judgement on people. Aasfor Fitzy88, I take his comment as his opinion on the traffic and day care as he has lived here, you haven't. In fact you havent lived in most of the places you have reviewed.

kaindec

By the way,I rest my case. You can have the last say.

golfers

She says "After staying for 2 weeks as a trial, we are glad we did not buy here"
Given all the apparent 'knowledge' of economics and how bad the losses would be if you bought here, why would you stay for two weeks as a trial before buying? Who does this anyway....where would you stay?
Such talk is obviously from an agent trying to bring the higher rated suburbs down and their own suburb up. If you read her reviews, it's not hard to see where her office might be.

Ollygt

Traffic and commute time is always going to be a problem in the Western suburbs because there are no decent arterials at all, no busways etc. But its really the only problem despite some inflated prices for very ordinary homes, which once again seems to plague the Western suburbs.

golfers

Hey Olly.....but the reason prices are high for the type of real estate is because people want to live here. Prices are always driven by market supply and demand. You have stated the very reason why prices seem inflated, the only real problem is traffic, and even that can be managed, by most people, with a bit of thought. Everything else is brilliant which may be why you live here.

Itsdoc

I don't know what way you were going to get to the airport but we NEVER had any issues with getting there. 25-30 min max. My brother lived with us for a while and worked at the airport, and never had a problem getting to the airport.....

kaindec

It is interesting to note that 1. Ihatetraffic changed his name to Blahdeblah when people started to disagree .2. I Blahdablah, formally known as Ihatetraffic changed all his ratings to one star for every suburb that someone questioned his logic, Originally had Keperra and many others at 3 stars plus 3. Bladehblah hasnt been active since the flurry of reviews on 25+ suburbs from Wollongong to the Sunshine Coast. 4. Maybe the moderators should remove his reviews or at least change the ratings back to there original rating as it is clear they are not what he really thinks.

Be_positive

I think all the above arguments are pointless. Ultimately, we each find suburbs we like and want to live in, or are forced to live in due to budget constraints or can afford to pay inflated prices based solely on trends/class divides/perceived exclusiveness. My family will be moving to Keperra in Sept 2013, and we bought not on the basis of residents' comments alone but based on proximity to train, shops, flood reports, overall pricing, future resale value, the potential of the house itself to suit our current lifestyle, and the feel of the neighbourhood. We didn't like the idea of investing more than 500k on a house in Australia as many other suburbs are over-priced opposed to the actual land size + value of the house. Actual value and paper value are two different things. That is applicable anywhere one buys property. We have been buying/selling and own property in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia so we have many years' practise in evaluating and purchasing value-for-money assets. So far, we have been lucky not to lose money in any of them. As for whether our neighbours are friendly or not, remains to be seen. The value of any suburb/city will speak for itself over time and by reputation spread by word of mouth and official statistics on safety, convenience, turn-over of residents profiles, property replacements/values and land prices. From all that we have read and heard, Keperra looks to be a suburb on the way upwards, albeit slowly. BTW, we bought a sloping block, and we like it as it gives us two varied facades, front and back of the house. So, it's all a matter of personal preference and evaluation. Let's just agree to disagree with ihatetraffic/blahdeblah. Instead, as residents of Keperra, let's put our time & energy into making it a great place to live in!

ZarineH

We bought in Keperra in 2013 at mid 400k price after doing some extensive research on proximity to train and city, location, suburb profile, shopping, house sizes, number of bathrooms, parking spaces, land size and comparative value of property. We are glad we bought here. Our neighbours are decent, hard working folk. we have not had a negative experience so far in terms of safety. There are several housing commission families but they are never a problem to us (except for loud gatherings some weekend nights but we had such problems even in "better", "posher" suburbs especially with wannabe "socialite" types and rich brats and their bratty, spoilt pals partying on weekends) and keep their yards neat. All in all, with all the properties we own or have owned in the past, Keperra has been very good value for money. Tenants are very happy - professional couple with small child in main house and another young couple in the granny flat. All amenities within 10 minutes walk or two - five minutes drive. And 20 minutes to city or airport during off peak. Plus the train down the street. And we like the sloping block as it give the house a unique character and style. And the "older" house gives us the chance to tweak it to our needs and purpose over the years, while adding value to the property. In fact, prices have gone up and our house is now valued at about 500K and fetches $480 a week return. What's not to like? In fact we are thinking of living in the house when we retire as the land size is good for gardening and we can just walk to the shops at GWSC. Don't judge any suburb by any one person's view. Research is important, and also budget and purpose of investment.

"Keperra: A suburb on the up and up!"

Aesthetically and architecturally, Keperra might not be Ashgrove, but it's definitely improving! It's a family friendly suburb, with easy access to shops and schools. Being on a train line is fantastic, and the local bus network (connecting to The Gap and Brookside on the 362) is handy. The Great Western Super Centre is a sizeable shopping centre, but it would be improved – in looks and substance – if the owners (Brookfield) were to continue and ultimately finish the re-development on the quarry site that was begun in the pre- Global Financial Crisis years. I'd love to see better pedestrian access to the shops at Great Western and Dallas Pde, in addition to footpath access throughout the suburb generally.
Keperra is a great area, and it's good to see local residents taking increasing pride in their suburb.

Great for

  • Great local schools
  • Close to a good golf course
  • Convenient basic shopping

Not great for

  • Could be improved with more footpaths
  • Better children's play equipment in parks would be welcome!
  • Peak hour traffic on Samford Road
  • Has its good and bad parts

"Nice Place with a bright future..."

Keperra is a bit of a secret, good area to live in and I would expect good capital gains over the next few years with the urban sprawl.
Convenient to all things and is more for the growing family that does the Saturday sports and schooling type of activity. Not good for Nightlife but plenty of clubs and pubs within a short distance. Only issue is the quarry with it still being there due to GFC but will eventually go and there will be plenty of capital works involved so will help grow the median value of the area.
Affodable housing with still some good sized blocks with good foundations going for around 400k on the western side of samford road and nice houses on 700sqm on the kings estate which is conveniently located to access the city from Samford or Waterworks Road.
This is one area that is under valued due to the estates surrounding it being overpriced or people wanting more modern dwellings on much smaller blocks. Everything will in time be renovated and convenience will repay those that decide to call Keperra home.

Great for

  • Convenient basic shopping
  • Green and leafy
  • Quiet and safe

Not great for

  • Peak hour traffic on Samford Road

A sensible commentator, the two reviews you have done are good but you should write more for us.

blahdeeblah

Fellow bias judgemental comment with no depth or proper explanation of the area as a whole. People should just drive there and check it all out themselves, especially peak hour, and orices are still coming down, renting is a much more affordable option, our financial advisor said investing here was a bad decision for us based on the expense to the rent return, people who rented here for the last 3 years are better off not only by what thye saved but by not losing money on the houses, check out the recent sold proces compared to a few years ago. Serious losses out this way.

kaindec

If it has the losses you keep talking about then it would be a good time to buy I would assume. Either was your mis-informed and always say you get attacked for your comments.Facts and opinions are different things with a shade of reality in between. Please dont reply with an comments about, north korea, nazism and how people who respond to you are biased and all the other ridiculous stuff you come up with. Again you can have the last say on this.

It appears as though Bunnings have resubmitted their DA to build at Keperra with speciality shops, sport and rec, restaurant and a vet. Unfortunately no cinema at this time but will still be good for house prices. The Train Station is now completed, the dual tracks in place, increased timetable to every 15 mins outside of peak. The new tavern is almost finished and the land on the old quarry is up for sale.Wardell Street upgrade underway, Kedron Brook Road completed. The future is looking bright for Keperra and surrounding suburbs with all these capital works and private investment.

"Handy to the CBD without being pricey"

I moved here in October 2005 having bought while living in Canberra in 2003. I live in a friendly and relatively quiet street. Nearby Great Western Shopping Centre is easy to access and has everything you could want for a local outlet. The suburb is definitely green with the parks and bushland reserve making it easy to escape for an hour or two. Not far from here is Ferny Grove and a series of further bushland areas, part of the Brisbane Forest Park. I won't be moving for a while.

We moved from renting at inner-city Paddington to owning a home in Keperra about 3 years ago.

We really enjoy the many parks, local coffee shops and easy transport connections from Keperra.

With so many young couples and families moving into the area it is fast becoming a really lovely place to live. The suburb has exceeded our expectations but it still has some way to go.

I think within the next 5 years (after the quarry is developed as planned into residential housing), the area will really take off. It's good now but it will be even better in the future.

I give it full stars for:
- exceeding expectations
- having everything you could want at your doorstep
- affordability
- future growth

"Huge potential!"

Awesome place to live. Having come from renting an upmarket suburb in the inner city to purchase, our expectations of the suburb have well been exceeded. We were only planning to be here 2-3 years but are now looking to double or triple this time at least and raise our family here. Forget what it used to be, this place has potential screaming from the gentle rolling hills of the Keperra bushlands, right through to the leafy parks and golf course. Once the quarry has finished there will be no stopping Keperra's value. In terms of capital growth definitely a suburb to watch...

"Growing Community"

Keperra has changed for the better in five years and we love loving here. More people are planning renovations that are in keeping with the post ware era style housing. The Dallas Parade shopping Centre is also improving, all we need is a good bakery. Keperra has lost the stigma of a housing commission ghetto.

"Great place to live"

Close to the city, only 20 mins by train. great local shopping centres. Plenty of schools nearby. Good pubs and Leauges Club also. Everything is close - pubs, schools, shopping, doctors, dentist parks, train and bus. It's all there. and prices are very low considering it is only 11km from the city!
