"Great value for a suburb that comes with a bit of everything"

I moved here a few years ago after buying a small apartment in the area.
I used to live around the inner west for most of my time before and in compare this is a very quiet suburb as long as you are not next to Victoria Road.
Luckily it doesn't have any monstrous high rises and is not densely populated like Rhodes, Ryde or Wentworth Point.
At the same time West Ryde has all the basics that are required like 2 supermarkets, a few asian groceries, a couple of butchers, library, barber shops, gyms, RSL club (as part of the RSL gym there is also an indoor swimming pool), medical centres etc
Plus if you require a bit more Top Ryde, Macquarie Centre, Bunnings, Ikea are all close distance, probably not more than 5-10 minutes drive away.
There are some nice parks like Anzac Park or Darvall Park to enjoy a walk or a picnic or for kids to take advantage of the playgrounds and can go up to Denistone Park to enjoy the view from the lookout.
There is also a decent variety of options if fancy eating out locally with 2 pubs, a few Korean restaurants (some of them even better than the ones in Eastwood), Japanese restaurants, pizza places and a few others.
Transport wise there is a train station and it takes around 20/25 minutes to get to Central with the express train at peak time, otherwise there is also an express bus option, 500X, to reach the CBD.
Prices of units in the suburb haven't gone particularly up or down since I have been living here, making it probably a good entry point for people looking to buy their first property in a nice quiet suburb.
My only complaint at the moment is that the local council has been promising for a while to invest and improve the area around the shopping center, if that happens it will be such a boost for the suburb if those streets and lanes are going to be revamped.

"Best Decision Ever!"

We bought our first home here and love the area. Victoria road is so close still inside its so quiet and peaceful. Close to train, ferry and bus to city, in centre to CBD or Parramatta or hill districts, can reach anywhere in 30mins drive or train ride. Good facilities for sports like tennis, swimming, badminton, soccer, cricket, basketball...lovely green lanes, big parks and playgrounds, nice cafe and restaurants. Nice walking and cycling track along river.

"Best first home decision"

I can't recommend this suburb highly enough. It has everything one's would need, and has a really good connection to Sydney CBD and Parramatta. Everything about it is excellent: plenty of good childcare and schools, convenient local shops with Woolworth and Coles, close to Top Ryde, IKEA Rhodes, great public library, fascinating cafes and restaurant, amazing connection via train/bus/ferry. If you are rather active, there are many good options for outdoor activities around, including great bike tracks by the waterfront and a huge swimming pool in Ryde.

"Great value and location"

West Ryde is a great place to live. The value you get here, especially for apartments, is really excellent considering how close it is to the geographical centre of Sydney. There’s nothing spectacular about the place, although some of the streets bordering on Denistone (especially those north of Victoria Road) are leafy and picturesque, with some appealing heritage homes. I’ve also noticed that, despite the grungy facade of Victoria Road and the shops near the station, there are some great cafes that have opened in recent years (Element 6 is my favourite) while West Ryde marketplace is modern, clean and very convenient with two supermarkets. Some of the streets surrounding this area, though hilly, have great views. West Ryde feels safe (the statistics back up this impression) and there’s a real sense of community. It’s also incredibly convenient to drive or train to various parts of Sydney - the city, north shore, Parramatta, Macquarie University, Olympic Park, IKEA Rhodes, and parts of the inner west can all be accessed within a 25 minute drive or commute which is quite unique. Hopefully with a bit more TLC, the shopfront areas (especially Victoria Road) will improve to make West Ryde as visually appealing as it is convenient and welcoming.

"An undervalued suburb situated between several business districts & recreational areas"

West Ryde is a 30 min drive to Sydney City and Parramatta business districts and half that time to Macquarie Park. It's also accessible by bus and train. Being a stone's throw from the Parramatta river cycleway enables fitness and cycle enthusiasts to enjoy the river superloop that takes in beautiful river views and lots of open, green parks and recreational spaces. Meadowbank ferry is nearby for excursions by boat, and the ever Top Ryde City Centre & Macquarie Shopping Centre less than 15min away offer great shopping and dining options. I have lived in the area for 10 years and have never heard or witness any delinquency. It might have a grungy facade but it's a suburb with lots of potential, great offerings and a happy and cohesive community.

"Good shopping facilities and close to waterside"

West Ryde is thoroughly recommended for families who are seeking a tranquil atmosphere, in which they can enjoy a laid back lifestyle in tandem with having bustling transport links, shopping amenities, culture and eating hubs, etc. The only downfall is that situationally, its presence in north west Sydney seems relatively awkward.

"An amazing small town which feels like home."

West Ryde is an amazing place to live. It isn't too crowded, it isn't isolated either, it's the defintions of a friendly, peaceful small suburb. The West Ryde village and along Victoria road, you will find a variety of different stores for your every need, including charming resturants and cafe's. Along with these resturants, many fast-food places such as Mcdonalds, KFC, Subway and Dominos can be found in West Ryde. There's also a variety of public transport available. Overall West Ryde has proved to be a perfect place to settle in to, it feels like home in no time.

"Great for the growing family."

I spent the early part of my childhood between 0-10 years old growing up in Huxley St, West Ryde. A very friendly suburb to grow up. Very friendly neighbourhood with modern houses within the suburb, many located on 700sqm blocks minimum plus all located a short stroll to station, schools, parklands and river ferry. The location is 15km from the CBD and is easily accessed via Victoria Road. Over the years the suburb has enjoyed strong capital growth each year as many more buyers look to suburbs located 20 minutes from the CBD.

"A thriving suburb"

I have lived in the suburb of West Ryde for 21 years and I cannot find another suburb in Sydney in which I have felt as safe and secure. Overall, West Ryde has grown remarkably in the last five (5) years with the redevelopment of parks, roads, apartment complexes and shopping precincts (Top Ryde City and West Ryde Marketplace to name a few).

West Ryde is in a convenient location with a variety of public transport options in which to travel to any part of Sydney, particularly the CBD, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and array of areas to the north and south of the Parramatta River bank.

More importantly, West Ryde continues to have a neighbourly spirit within many of its quiet streets and there is no shortage of childcare and/or medical facilities within West Ryde and the adjacent suburbs.

Other than an increase in traffic during peak hour, over the years, and some limited parking options on Victoria Road, I cannot find much fault with living in the suburb.

"Great transport, shops and close to the city"

West Ryde is a great place to live, I have been here for almost 2 years and never had any problems. The West Ryde village shops is getting a new Coles, a second undercover parking and more shops. There are a lot of new properties being built, and house prices have seen a jump in 2010. The blocks are large and the streets are leafy and a great place for families. The West Ryde station is relatively new and provide commuters with everything they need. As a woman, I have never had a problem walking back from the station late at night and feel safe. Overall we would recommend West Ryde to people that we know to live here.

"Underrated neighborhood with easy access to everything"

I've lived in West Ryde for almost 10 years now, in three different locations: Clarke street, in the northeast, Moira avenue in the west, and now Union street in the south of the suburb. One thing was uniform about all locations: the neighbours are friendly, noise levels at night are low, and the suburb feels safe (for the most part).

All parts of West Ryde are well serviced by public transport, in fact so well that they should consider cancelling a few bus services because they rarely have passengers outside of peak hours. If you live in the southern part of west ryde you are also within walking distance of meadowbank ferry.

For the health nut there is meadowbank park, which is nice for walking the dog or going for the morning run/jog. There are also numerous cycleways going to the city, western suburbs, and olympic park/botany bay.

For the shopper there are many options - Rhodes, Top Ryde, Parramatta, Macquarie, West Ryde to name a few. Unfortunately there are far too many Woolworths in the area and they collude to keep prices high - especially in west ryde where even the butcher sets his prices to match woolies, and woolies stopped a greengrocer from setting up in the centre so you have to put up with sub-par veges from the supermarket. For groceries, Rhodes is the best bet as the coles is marginally cheaper and the butcher/greengrocer are way cheaper (and have better quality produce). Parramatta is also a good option for similar reasons.

Unfortunately West Ryde is a haven for rat runners (people who go through the back streets to avoid congestion on Victoria road) - this makes the back streets (constitution road, parkes street, ryedale road) clogged and unsafe at times because a lot of the drivers are impatient and do not stop for lights/crosswalks.

Also West Ryde is a category 3/4 with insurers, which means that the rates are a bit high because of the number of claims made in the area for home/car insurance. The suburb does feel safe but there is some crime. After all the suburb surrounds a major artery and is only 18km from the CBD, so things will happen.

News is that the NSW (labor socialist) government is setting up some public housing in the area directly around west ryde station and also darvall road in the west of the suburb - avoid buying in these areas, they will go down.

  • Public transport
  • Convenience to shopping precincts
  • Parks, Recreation facilities

"Some doggy neighbourhood in certain streets"

The area is not as safe as what people would perceive. There have been a few incidents to residents such as armed robberies or violent assaults. Some streets may have doggy neighbourhood that you may want to avoid especially after sun set. My friend who lived in the area for over 20 years told me that the area was not as good as it used to be.

Any idea which streets to avoid?

Littlebear

I'll avoid the part of Ryedale Rd and Forster St that is near the Ryde Eastwood League Club, and streets around the Anzac Park at night can be doggy sometimes. You may also need to be a bit more careful when walking along Parkes St at night as well.

"Comfortable living environment with ease access to transport & shopping"

I've been living here for 3 three years ever since I bought my first home at West Ryde. I've got friendly and helpful neighbors. It's a very short drive to the business park around the ares so close to work, if you are driving to work. With the new addition of the Top Ryde shopping, it will add more spices to the life here.

"Leafy green suburb convenient to transport and other areas of Sydney"

I have lived in this area for approx 5-6 years now.

Pros:
Its a great location with the train station, ferry and bus routes. You are close to Parrmatta too. The shops on Victoria Road are all the ones you basically need - even has maccas!

Cons:
Parking anywhere near Victoria road can be difficult.
