"Lived here for 21 years"

My family moved me here when I was 3 years old. When I grew up it was a small country town, everyone knew everyone, no crime, etc. As the years went along they started developing all the farmland into housing estates, its not the same as it was. Its still safe, reasonably priced homes and country feel to it. There is a lot of young families in the area. It is pretty culturally diverse as I see many different ethnicity's in the area. It is still a good place to live, I just enjoyed my quiet, country, small town when I was growing up. the main con of mernda is the traffic, they developed the land with no road infrastructure.

"Best move we made"

We moved to Mernda in 2014 after living in Brunswick for 8 years. It was the best thing we did! The fresh air was a welcome change to the inner city smog and we love that we can safely walk around our leafy green neighbourhood. We live in the Woodland Waters part of Mernda which is IMO the best area of the suburb compared to the newer estates being built in Mernda. It's surrounded by beautiful red river gums and open spaces but also has close access to Plenty Road. It offers the perfect mix of country and city. The Woodland Waters estate is filled with lovely families and I think it's unfair to taint Mernda with the bogan brush as some reviewers below have done. All my neighbours are hard working and house proud. I really think we bought at the right time when it was affordable, and I think it will only improve once all the planned infrastructure is complete.

"Beautiful area surrounded by huge River Red Gums"

Have lived in Mernda for four years. It is very different to other growth suburbs of melbourne because of the natural beauty of the trees and hills. Great options for shopping with the opening of the new woolworths in Mernda including cafes and takeaway shops. The Mernda kindergarten is fantastic. Opening of the south Morang station has made getting to the city much easier. Plenty road duplication will help to ease traffic. Lots of nice friendly families in the area. Lovely parks and playgrounds. Some really nice restaurants popping up in the area including Two Beans and a Farm at Carome Homestead. A lovely place to live.

"Started great but going down hill"

We were so excited to move to Mernda and had high expectations. We built a lovely home. However, whilst our immediate surrounds were nice and our neighbours, the rest of the area is becoming spoilt by scum bag bogans. Hoons are everywhere and seems everyone is fat and smokes and can't wear anything but tracksuits. The parks and wetlands are so beautiful but not appreciated by those living close by. Lots of commission housing now and investment properties which can encourage the tramps of society in. Call me a snob - I don't care - I don't want Toorak but I want decent people who have manners and pride in their surrounds and community.
The traffic is terrible and causes everyone to be grumpy and to be rude on the road. Constantly see people with road rage. Primary school is actually really nice - but there are no high schools.
I have been 'told' Doreen is better - don't think so. It has been scoped and planned the same as Mernda and the house and land deals/sizes are the same. Besides all the suburbs roll into each other anyway with the sprawl of development. Oh and the new South Morang station is a joke. Expect to park 10 minutes walk from the station. If you work in the city (which lets face it most people do) its gonna take you 3 hours of commuting a day. Glad we sold and got away from a place I was starting to really hate.

davsdarling
davsdarling What does someone's weight have to do with anything? Other than that remark I agree with you. The driving is deplorable, people have actually tried to run me off the road and kill me, there are commission houses in the Mernda villages estate (north of bridge inn road) the houses are ridiculously small, I hear the land owners who own the farm are only being offered 80,000 an acre and then they greedy bastards put 8 houses on that acre, apparently according to some builders I know the area has been intentionally designed this way to encourage people to get out and meet their neighbours but it is quickly turning into a ghetto. I am renting but only because I wanted to see if I wanted to buy here, it seems there are two kinds of people that live in the area, rude snobs, and rude scum-bags, so thanks but no thanks!

mindboggled The impending transport chaos in the Whittlesea area was analysed very well over two years ago - not, of course, by anyone in the state government. I thought this article was particularly good:

Where have you moved to now?

MoongoldX
MoongoldX Good to hear someone being honest and not air-headed about Mernda living. I moved there 2007 and it was lovely - quiet, clean, new estate. Then the idiots and ratbags and hoons moved in from areas such as Reservoir. Everything went downhill from there. People today have no respect for others, their environment or anything else. They will ruin this new area just as they do every other place where decent people live.

Modern Developments
Modern Developments I'm pretty curious as to where all of these commission houses are as I work in property development and can guarantee that there are no commission houses in Mernda Villages. There are apartments and townhouses, but these are not to be confused with commission houses. People should do their research properly before condemning a suburb for commission houses that do not actually exist.

"New bogan neighborhood with plenty of commission homes and Fitzroy style apartments"

When I first moved here 3 years ago I thought it was going to be a beautiful place to start a family. How wrong I was. Were being flooded with commission homes and apartments which is doing major damage to merndas reputation and to the value of our properties. Small builders are sweeping through now building tiny shoeboxes only suitable for investors and community housing and the defence housing. Trucks are also a problem thinking its ok to drive like crazy down mernda village drive. Families are getting fed up and moving to doreen but are trying to sell their homes at unrealistic prices in this market. We wont be here for much longer and are planning to move out of this doomed suburb! Good luck everyone get out while u can.

family_man While i agree we do have a lot of community housing projects i will disagree with the rest of your rant! Do you really believe Doreen doesnt have the same "issues" as Mernda?? Cmon get real! Lots of tiny blocks, lots of town houses, units/apartments and terrible traffic congestion. I dont know about the value of your property but mine has increased since we moved in, maybe you live in one of those shoe boxes you speak about? I'm quite happy with the smaller homes in my street as it makes mine look all the grander and that will obviously help with resale. Enjoy your dreamy Doreen and i'll look forward to reading your next rant about how bad that is :)

Plenty of new things being built for the people in the area, so they are always vigilant about looking after you best interest out here. Just dont use PROPERTY PLANET - Worst experince of my entire life. More than happy to advise why simply contact me on [email protected] Other than that this area is wonderful.

"Best of both worlds."

Lovely area.. lots of parks and great facilities for young kids. It has a country feel, but still a short drive to major shopping centres and only 30kms to the city. Traffic can be a problem on Plenty Rd but hopefully this will improve once the road duplication is completed. Mernda also currently lacks its own cafe's, shops etc but the new town centre is due to be built soon.

MoongoldX
MoongoldX Road duplication hasn't changed traffic at all! Coming out of new estate on Plenty Road you have to line up for 2 blocks just to get onto Plenty Rd peak hour. 2 hours drive more the usual into the CBD, if you like to spend that much time. Overcrowded, noisy, families with brats totally disrespecting adults, etc etc. It's become the normal bogan suburb.

MoongoldX Saying Mernda is great for retirees is rubbish. It's geared to house families with disobedient, screaming brats, partygoers with no respect for others' privacy or rights to peace and quiet. Was once lovely, now going to rot. And traffic congestion peak hours is worse than ever up around Woodland Waters estate.

MindyC I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo glad I clicked on this review about living in Mernda!!! I am in the process of selling my home in Doncaster and was considering the idea of building my dream home in either Doreen or Mernda. Definitely NOT GOING TO HAPPEN NOW that I have read and scrutinised the negative comments and warnings. Thankyou to all who have expressed their honest concerns and views. I am a firm believer that "when you want to know something, ASK THE NEIGHBOURS AND THE LOCAL INHABITANTS". Seems to me that NOWHERE in Metropolitan Melbourne are these new developments suitable for decent semi-retirees looking for a safe, friendly and peaceful place to make a home. Maybe I should look to Castlemaine or Echuca for better options ... at least the property values are escalating at a rapid rate and I will be spared the "hoons and neighbourhood brats!!!". Good luck to those of you who want a better life ... we all deserve it.
