Reviews of Mascot, NSW
"GREAT SUBURB FOR FAMILIES"
I have lived in Mascot my entire life (22 years) and highly recommend this suburb especially for families.
There are multiple great schools in the area ( I went to St Therese Primary School) and loved it there. The public transportation was also very convenient with lots of nearby buses available. Lestrange Park is also a great park for dog walking, physical activity and for taking kids.
If you are planning on living in Mascot I would recommend living around the Mascot Shops side not close to Mascot Train Station as there is quite a lot of new developments and traffic around that side of Mascot.

"Living in Mascot"
Having lived in Mascot for a few years I can only give my view of living here and the pros and cons. The area feels very industrial with a stigma attached to it because of the airport. The aircraft noise whenever the wind is predominantly northerly is loud and overwhelming. We were surprised moving here how little pride people took in their gardens and unlike other areas relied on the council to maintain the nature strips. The amount of unlawful rubbish left around the streets is an eyesore as is the amount of dog crap on the footpaths. The area has some good places to eat and it is convenient to the beach and city with train and bus services. If you play golf there are endless choices of places to play. Shopping choices include Mascot, East Lakes, East Gardens and East Village. Most of the better schools are not in the suburb. The area has its newer built complexes near the station which have good amenities and have a lot of appeal, whilst most of the homes are older Californian or workers cottages. Compared to other areas of the Eastern Suburbs, Mascot is the poor cousin and the cost of housing and price increases reflect this. If you can afford another area I would strongly suggest you consider it carefully. For us Mascot was a poor choice and we’re moving on.
"A buzzing town"
This town is buzzing from construction, freight trains, planes, trucks, buses, cars and taxi drivers. If you are looking for a peace and quiet location with sizable land, mascot is not for you.
Although it has a couple of good pubs and is 10mins train ride to central station, it doesn't offer much else.
The daycare centers seem to be a premium for very little quality care also. The number of roadworks in the area have slowed down traffic considerably. Streets have roadworks for several months to years. It's not as temporary as you might think. Not to mention the apartment boom in the area.
"Comfort and convenience at a reasonable price"
We are a DINK (double income with no kids) and live in the aero complex at Mascot. The area is very child and pet friendly with nearby parks, cafes, a convenient SPAR, affordable yummy eats for those lazy nights off cooking with choices of Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Italian, Dominos and very soon a very handy Woolworths, pharmacy, GP and more restaurants opening in 2016 at Mascot Central. Most importantly, it is very convenient to the city and work. It takes me half an hour to North Sydney and only 10 minutes to Central station. Trains come every 10 minutes which means I never need to look at a timetable. Getting to the airport only costs $12 (domestic) and a little more for international - very handy for those work trips. 10 minute drive to UNSW, 15-20 mins to Maroubra beach, 5-10 mins to Dank street, and walking distance to The Grounds. Happy days!
The other advantage is internet speed. We have NBN in the building so streaming Netflix on one TV and Stan on the other is never an issue.
The downside is aircraft noise, however it doesn't make the place shake or interfere with TV (like Lilyfield/Leichardt where i used to reside). The planes generally fly over Marrickville/Tempe so you do get the noise but its not deafening. After a while you just learn to ignore it and it doesn't bother me at all.
I'd highly recommend Mascot for couples or young families.
Great for
- Close to UNSW
- Pet friendly, nearby parks
- Close to airport for those who travel often
- Beach is not too far
- Train, bus and roads to city, M5 are all good.
- Train fare to the city is very reasonable now.
- Shops are close by, SPAR, Bourke St Bakery, restaurants and cafes etc.
Not great for
- Occasionally hear a plane or two

"Friendly and Close to everything"
Had reservations about moving from Marrickville to Mascot but was pleasantly surprised.
Mascot has a great friendly community spirit and made up of a diverse range of people from different cultures and backgrounds.
It has it's own comprehensive shopping strip which includes fast food and restaurants and is only 10-15 minutes from other shopping & restaurant precincts like Newtown, Alexandria, Marrickville, Surry Hills, Kingsford and Eastgardens.
Also handy to the eastern suburb beaches.
Sure there is aircraft noise but it is not as bad as Marrickville or other suburbs in the inner west which constantly have the larger international jets shaking the house. Depending on wind direction/weather there can be many consecutive days in a row without them in Mascot.
The council maintains the parks and streetscapes of suburb well and most residents seem to be house proud.
An overdue redevelopment of the Eastlakes shopping centre is coming which will benefit Mascot and other surrounding suburbs.
Great for
- Friendly community
- Plenty of access to shops, cafe's and restaurants
- Close to Alexandria & Moore Park Homemaker Centres
- Beach is not too far

- Train fare to the city is very reasonable now.

"Starting to love to live in Mascot"
When I first move in to Mascot 3 years ago and thought the place was too quiet with not enough living around.
3 years on lots of residential development have come up. Attracted a lot of city and airport workers living in the area. Love Bourke St Bakery, SPAR is just within foot steps, restaurants and cafes are aIl nearby, Childcare centres are close by, Airport line is within 5 mins walk to train station, 2 train stops to Central via city circle.
I used to pay $48 a week on train to work at North Sydney, now I only pay $31 a week including all stops to city circle.
Just love this place more so everyday.

"Look again Mascot is developing more trendy by the day. 2 stops to the city."
Lived here for the past year and have seem some great changes with its attractiveness for renters and buyers. The public transport is great and fast and now the trains are no longer privatizes. its even better value.
Also something that makes it a nice place to live is the main shopping area of Mascot along Botany road. During my past 12 months of living here I have seen new coffee shops open up and the image of being a but of a stale run down area as it was many years ago with the workers cottages is now modernizing with a different crowd that are looking for trendy place to shop and eat and spent.
It is still an untouched one of the sydney villages because it has a cute local feel. however with the growing appeal of the area lots of the family business from the ethnic community are updating the look of the shops but still keeping the great cultural diversity that makes these villages such a pleasant place to walk around and live next to.
new shops include; Bourke street Bakery, Christophers cake shop enlargements, gloria jeans, new sushi place new fitted out bottle shop, dentist... the list goes on.
its really on the up and up and I am almost in a position to buy a second investment property in this booming rental market.
Great for
- Train, bus and roads to city, M5 are all good.
- Beach is not too far
- It is in the easter suburbs and still cheap for what you get
Not great for
- The shopping village closes too early on saturday and sunday at 4.30 (but getting more hours in the night)
- Occasionally hear a plane or two
- Not as fashionable as surry hills and rosebery but its developing fast.

I’m with you! I really rate this suburb highly for affordability and value for money.
I think you were to kind with your comment “ occasionally hear a plane or two” considering there are parts of the suburb I would describe as terribly affected by aircraft noise and fumes, but as long as you stay away from these streets Mascot offers so much more for so much less then neighbouring suburbs.
"Mascot: Up and coming!"
I am a relatively new resident of Mascot, but I love it!
Main benefits
- 25 mins to the city on an express bus
- 1 Stop away from Central station on the train
- Good, cheap multicultural food (Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese)
- Affordable housing
- We were totally surprised at the friendly, helpful vibe of Mascot. Many residents have lived there their whole lives, so there's a solid community spirit.
- Hong Ha rolls!
Detractions
- Depending on where you live, planes can be a problem. Check out this map: http://maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=105686047848531438589.00046881acd1e03708602
- The train station isn't in the centre of Mascot, it's in an industrial area
- The train line is privatised, and therefore expensive. It doesn't matter that much though as the busses are fast and frequent

"Huge Potenial very convenient!"
The suburb is a hidden gem! Close to the airport, city, eastern suburbs beaches yet so affordable! Get in quick as prices are growing as more and more as people realize what a great place it is to live! Decent size blocks of land and schools close by. Airplane noise is actually not that noticable, maybe we got used to it, you just hear one going once in a while. Nothing like sydenham! They fly right above your head there! Highly recommended if your looking for a something affordable in the east.

"Nice, convenient and lots of potential"
I've been living in Mascot for more than half year and I love the place. The best thing I can say about Mascot is its convenient location that connects you to every place in Sydney due to its proximity to the airport - a place should be made convenient to many travellers around Sydney. I am rarely caught in a traffic jam (the only chance this can happen is there is a road work or accident) and it has several different routes to the city area. Unlike the western and inner west area which make me frustrated every time I drive the car.
Mascot is full of potential since it's close to the city and lots of developments have been taken place. It will attract more people and more businesses to come in so the facilities can much be improved and a lot easier for grocery shopping and perhaps better transport.
The only shortcomings are the little plane noise and yet to improve public transport. I'm glad to see the No.20 Metro bus has started service in Mascot and significantly reduced the waiting time for bus traveling to and from the city. I wish there will be some more bus services connecting the train station or O'riordan/Bourke st to the city and the price of train service to be reduced.

"Up and coming"
Great place for families. Streets just one back from Botany Road are very quiet. Plane noise is minimal. Whilst staying in Mascot for a week, only heard planes (not overly loud) on a Saturday morning only. Easy access to all facilities. Like the feel of the place.

"Mascot - Very busy with a bit of airport noise."
Mascot is very close to Sydney CBD and can be divided into two very distinct parts. There is the residential area which has federation style a houses and semi along with flats and units. Many of these streets are quite and are great for families and retirees alike. Property prices like any area so close to the city are on the high side yet Mascot is not as highly priced as those suburbs close to the water. There are some good shopping facilities including supermarkets, discount department store and speciality shops. There is a good library and several clubs nearby for entertainment. Not far away though is Sydney’s domestic and international airport. This busy airport is one of the major entry points to Australia and as such is very busy. There are a number of transport and freight companies near the airport as well

"An established neighbourhood"
Mascot is only a five minutes' drive away from Sydney airport and a twenty minutes' drive to the city. It is an established suburb with plenty of shops, cafes, grocers and etc. The main street gives a very good vibe and people around here seem very friendly. Houses around Mascot are your typical suburban houses. They are neat and tidy with good-sized backyards. The reasonable sized streets are lined with beautiful trees and walking around the suburb gives you a nice and warm feeling.
Mascot is also very connected by public buses. The only drawback to Mascot will be the level of noise pollution due to its proximity to the airports.

Hi Anthony,
Do you have any feedback on the schools in the area?
Thanks
