Reviews of Chermside, QLD

Editors Choice

"Nice and Neighbourly"

The area around the Chermside Markets, just north of the shopping centre has a good neighbourhood vibe, You will often see people out and about and everyone always says hello. It is only a short walk to the shopping centre and the bus service is regular from the bus station, though a little more unreliable as you go further north. Gympie Road does get extremely busy at peak hour, but it thins out again by 8:30am.

There is a cricket club that plays at Marchant Park, and you can often hear the sounds of the game during the weekends. Marchant Park is also great for exercise and offers really good facilities. If you are a hockey player, there is a very good club in the area.

Restaurants can be hit and miss around the area, but the Kedron Wavell RSL is excellent, with great values meals and drinks. There are a number of new restaurants opening up around the shopping centre and there is a brilliant Thai restaurant behind the shopping centre and across the road from the RSL.

We only moved here 18 months ago and it is not somewhere that we had really researched, but we are very happy that we moved into this area.

Great for

  • Great bus links
  • Close to everything
  • Great parks with free fitness equipment. Top aquatic centre
  • Best RSL in brisbane
  • Council Libraray

Not great for

  • Stop / start traffic due to the number of poorly timed traffic lights
  • Can't walk to railway station

Looking for a home in Chermside?

21st January 2024

"Not the same as it was 15 years ago. Noisy ambos and concrete jungle now"

Lived here for 16 years and it's not the same. It's a concrete jungle now. The sirens from Prince Charles is relentless and is throughout day and night. The noise from traffic is even worse we lived off Gympie Rd by rode Rd intersection and there was a crash everyday there. It used to be lovely and quiet until it became what it is now. The prices of homes are ridiculous for what you get. We opted to move away from the noise and are so glad. Have never looked back. I only miss our old eateries and egg farm for fresh eggs.

"24x7 annoying bloody Sirens, rescue helicopters and hoons."

A while ago now I moved away from chermside and that westfield that clogs up Gympie road. But came back to visit friends. It was the worst visit ever.....I love north brissy, but seriously its quieter of a night in the CBD than it is at damn chermside.
Not only does the westfield make noise 24x7 evacuation alarms, Loud extraction fans, pollution, trucks machinery etc etc etc, The damn Ambulances and emergency vehicles leave their siren on the whole way down the road from their depot near the roundabout on webster road all the way down gympie road, Now its not usually just one, but several repsonding, now they have the dumb rumbler siren that vibrates everything within its direction so you get constant ambulances occasional fire engines and annoying police helicopters sitting there perving thru their infra red at peoples houses but also the rescue chopper that sounds like a tank thumping thru the sky....
Every Single Day there are incessant sirens. Think again about moving here. It was bad 2 years ago, now its even more of a crudhole thanks to increased emergency vehicles on the road. Yeah the bus depot at westifeld is kinda handy, and not having to really leave the one suburb is handy too, but do you really want to got to the same place all the time? I hope I never have to move back here. But seriously they need to do something about kerbing the noise from sirens. Especially on an empty road at 1 2 3 4 am

"Close to schools, transport and shops"

Chermside was good suburb more than 15 years ago – less development and mostly 3-bedroom houses around Westfield shopping center. Development at Chermside is similar to Parramatta in Sydney and gradually becoming overcrowded.

PROS
a) Schools, public transport, Prince Charles Hospital, shops, government offices including ATO and
b) QLD Transport Dept, RSL club, restaurants etc.
c) 15 mins drive to Brisbane CBD, Airport and more desirable suburbs like Ascot, Hamilton, Hendra etc.

CONS

a) Streets surrounding Westfield parking is virtually impossible any time of the day or night.
b) Too many unit developments and bad traffic during peak hours.
c) Increasing crime rate.
d) No night life.
e) No train to city or other parts of Brisbane.

"A great suburb that has become known as a mini-CBD"

Located under 10kms from the Brisbane CBD, this suburb has become known a a mini-CBD itself. Home to Australia's largest Westfield Shopping Centre, there is plenty of entertainment at your doorstep with cinemas, shops and a dining precinct. With transport and schools, it's a great suburb that appeals to a wide demographic.

Sorry for taking so long, the traumatic memories of living in Chermside stopped me from answering your intricate question. I'll keep it short and sweet.
1. The bins are rarely picked up.
2. The neighbours are loud
3. The roads are always busy, people would park all along the road, leaving barely enough room for one car to travel.
4. Ugly, grey, Industrial.
5. Lots of traffic.
6. Many delinquent neighbours.
7. My mail would get stolen.
8. Someone tried to open my door multiple times.
9. Small houses crammed together.
10. Don't expect to have a good nights sleep, people love having parties, or screaming matches.
11. Overpopulated, so many apartment buildings, cars, pollution.
Here's the only two good things about this joke of a suburb:
1. Close to biggest Westfield in Queensland (good luck parking/crossing the road at the Gympie and Hamilton intersection )
2. Close to Bus stops.

I knew Chermside from 2008, when Westfield shopping centre just started. I started loving Chermside from 2009, when my friends bought a house here. I decided to move to Chermside in 2013, when I bought a property here. Someone said it is lots of traffic noise in nights, well, I have to say that's because you did not know Chermside. Actually in nights, it is quiet on streets. The noisy time is in the day time, but we cannot feel it, as we go to work as you.

"Has everything and everything is close by"

Chermside is a great easy-living suburb - it has everything and within walking reach. It is a suburb wilth all kind of housing options - majority of it detached residential but there are lots of units and now quite a few multi storey apartment blocks. Demograhpic is quite mixed too, originally there were a lot of retirees, but now quite a few professionals, young singles and families are moving in. I have lived in the area for thirty years (24 in Wavell heights and 6 in chermside); there was a time when houses in Chermside were 30% cheaper than the ones across the road in Wavell Heights, but now prices are at par. People may lament about it becoming hip and trendy, but we can't hold back time. In my opinion, due to its relative proximity to city and availability of all kind of amenities, it is good place to buy and establish a home.

Very true Neil, you can't stay the ever present hand of "progress". Wavell has maintained its old charm, with outstanding walking paths and teenagers keen to spray paint their names on them. Chermside however has changed dramatically in the 11 odd years Ive lived here. It isnt safe to venture out at night for fear of being accosted by drunken louts. It used to be safe for the kids to play in the playground, not so much now as the thugs from places like Zillmere have decided to call Chermside home. The demographic is mixed and becoming more skewed in favour of drug affected thugs whom congregate in the shopping centre, selling drugs to school kids. I remember back in the 80's Paramatta in Sydneys west had similar "progress", being touted as a second CBD (sound familiar?). Look at Paramatta now. It is what Chermside will be in 10-20 years time. A complete drug haven, fit only for those good for nothing thugs responsible for bringing the suburb I used to love into disrepair. The heavy hand of progress comes at a price. Long after the greedy developers leave Chermside it will be up to the people to pay that price. Sorry to be so negative Neil, but its the people that make a place more than its facilities. If becoming hip and trendy is a euphemism for social deterioration, then I agree with you whole heatedly. If, on the other hand, it is a euphemism for humanity's capacity to evolve and demonstrate kindness and consideration for their fellow man/woman, your way off the mark there.

parra-andc

I've lived in Parramatta and seen it develop into a beauty . The whining people have left and it now has people that enjoy the convenience and facilities . The doomsayers sold early and now i bet they wish they never left . Rundown house can not be bought for less than 1.2m with all the worlds convenience at your door step.
If you want to be on the wrong side of history then follow the OP advice otherwise buy in chermy and enjoy the ride , you won't be disappointed.
I also invest in chermy and chermy west and I can feel Parramatta replicating itself there in another 5-10 years.

emumof3
emumof3

I've lived in and worked in parramatta for the past 13 years and its definitely not a drug haven fit only for those good for nothing thugs!!!! There may be some people that do drugs that live here (like most suburbs anywhere in Australia). I certainly haven't bumped into one, or had any negative experience with a good for nothing thug here. Its become a trendy city out of the city with lots of great restaurant options.

"Buyer Beware"

How interesting that realestate.com.au has selectively deleted the comment I posted about living in Chermside. The reality is, we cant wait to leave this dive of a suburb. We have lived here for the past 10 plus years and have seen its decline into ruin during that time, with it all beginning with the introduction of Gillhooleys. Ever since then, we have seen a marked increase in the population of undesirables. The final straw for us was the introduction of paid parking in the shopping centre. Ever since then, everyone seems to be using the surrounding streets as their own private car park. Do yourself a BIG favour and give Chermside a WIDE birth, otherwise you will regret it. Hi there - we are from Sydney and are moving up to Brisbane and I thought Chermside would be great as on a train line and not too far from friends who live in North Lakes. We have a little boy (4 yrs old) and after reading your review, I do NOT want to live in this suburb. Where could you suggest is a nice place that is not too close to Brisbane city and is friendly neighbourhood, parks, schools and on a train line (so that when I start work) I don't have to travel for 30 mins to the city. Your help would be really appreciated as we have no idea where a child / family friendly area is (and of course, if its not too expensive to rent) - we are looking at paying up to $650 in rent if that helps (and want a house with pool) - thanks a lot for your help.

Hegatron

Hey cbdgal :) The sad reality is that my wife and I used to love living in chermside, and oddly enough i do miss certain aspects of the place. $650 pw is HUGE rent, so you could pretty much choose your suburb for that rent. I am not certain what suburbs are best on the northside as we have only lived in a few places. However, we did live in St Lucia back in my uni days. Its a nice leafy suburb with good schools and reasonable shopping options etc. It hasnt been ravaged by high rise developments that has befallen chermside. You do get a lot of students there, but we never had real issues. You do have a nice walking path along the brisbane river, just dont go there at night. There are some playgrounds for kids as well. Anyways, thats my pick. If I had the money to buy, ide buy there in a heartbeat. Hope that helped you out :D

cbdgal

Thanks for your reply, I did look up St Lucia and the hilarious thing is the pic that shows up on this site is one of the street flooded !! whoops! Unfortunately I don't want to live too far away from my friend which is why I am looking North rather than South. Living in Sydney for 11 years I have great friends here but only 1 friend in North Lakes so I know it is a bit of an upheaval to go into a new area and not know anyone and its nice just to have that support until we get to meet other families. Thanks Hegatron appreciate your reply : )

theearthisflat

why do you say such bad things about an Irish pub? That can't be a bad thing. Loutishness is annoying to live near though. Is there crime from the pub? You also say it's trendy and stylish. I would write to the council about the parking and just try to help in that way. Thank you.

carmenm7

I have lived here 12 years. Live about 2 k from the Westfield, where this infamous pub is located!! I dont get it. Are these guys living right next door? You cant blame the suburb for that. There are more beautiful suburbs but Chermside is too convenient to leave. Love it
