"Amazing Suburb - Get In While Its Affordable!"

As a prospective first home buyer having lived with my parents in Tarneit for almost 2.5 years (Habitat on Davis Creek) I really do believe Tarneit has it all.

For me the stand out points for a young professional and someone who would like to start a family in the near future. I have confidence in the lifestyle drivers, so much going on here:

- Countless parks and walking trails, if youre up for it you can take a drive to the You Yangs, Geelong, or the Great Ocean Road for a weekend adventure.

- Transport is outstanding. As Tarneit is part of the
VLine it takes me less than 30 mins on average to reach Southern Cross Station (sometimes the journey is 25 mins). If Im not mistaken, it would take you about the same time to commute if you were living in suburbs like Northcote, Brunswick or Preston.

- Multiculturalism is another highlight in Tarneit. So lovely to see people from all walks of the planet here. This draws into the community events and local businesses. The food (especially Indian, Middle Eastern, Thai and Vietnamese is top notch). No need to travel all the way into the inner city suburbs to get quality food and dining experiences.

- Safe communities with lively, active people. So many afternoons and evening families are out at the local park, on their bikes, or walking. Its so nice to see! People are friendly and I have never had any issues with crime here. So lovely to see kids playing together and parents having a chat.

- Werribee Plaza is very close and other shopping outlets. You never miss out. There is a growing community and new shopping facilities popping up as the community grows. The new Riverdale Village is a bustling hub and only opened about a year ago. Fit with a fruit and veg shop, Coles, Chemist, Gym to name a few.

- Demand for property is high here as future development of a large sports stadium, a second train station and improved roads and highway connections. The growth here is insane.

Now for a few cons to make it a balanced review:
- Some of the newer parts of Tarneit dont have very wide streets which can me an issue with on street parking.

- Some people use their Garages as additional rumpus/living rooms and open the Garage door which can be noisy. Most people are polite and close up around 8-9pm.

- Since there is a lot of development happening in Tarneit I have seen a lot of illegal dumping of rubbish and it is not nice to see. The council is cracking down on it. It is a slow process and only really notable in newer communities. In saying that we could all do our part and keep Tarneit going up and clean up after ourselves and do the right thing.

There are a lot of opportunities to build and buy around Tarneit. Each year I am noticing land sizes are getting smaller and housing is getting pricier so get in while you can. Hope this review helps.

"Great suburb, lovely area, friendly locals"

We moved to Tarneit from the Mornington Peninsula 3 months ago and absolutely love it! The suburb is as close to the Melbourne CBD as it is to they You-yangs and other natural places, but Tarneit also has a lot of parks and wetlands to enjoy. Most of the streets are very wide, tree lined (even if many are still newly planted) and most houses are cared for and look amazing. I compare this to much of the eastern/south eastern suburbs where many houses are just falling down because no-one cares.

"Slum like dwellings"

I have been to Tarneit couple of times. It clearly shows what kind of people live there. They litter everywhere and are least friendly. The houses being built are no less than slums with more concrete and less greener areas. Avoid this suburb if you can afford elsewhere.
All the positive reviews I see here are from the real estate agents trying to project this suburb as a good suburb but it actually isn't

0
Danstar

Not sure where you went but the majority of people have done wonderful landscaping at their front yards or the majority of new estates, the developer does it for them for freeof course youll get the odd few who let it go ugly; but tell me where this doesnt happen? How many people have you interacted with in Tarneit? Unless its in the hundreds, having 1 bad run in with someone shouldnt make you base the whole suburb as the same

andyc9
andyc9

You obviously don't live here so why even bother posting a bad review about a suburb? Tarneit is a young safe family suburb surrounded by green spaces, walking tracks and nature.
Tarneit is loved by many families that do live here and we definitely don't need nasty people like you around in our suburb. By the way most of us are friendly and very lucky to be living in Tarneit in our beautiful homes. I am not a realestate agent, nor do I plan on selling, I have happily lived in Tarneit for the past 11 years and plan to stay here until retirement. Your review only shows your bad character.

Slum-like? Really? Must be a part of Tarneit I'm not familiar with. The houses here, that I walk past every day, are all extremely well cared for and look amazing. Sure, there are the odd 1 or 2 that are neglected but compare that to many of Melbourne's older suburbs where the houses are falling apart.

Propinvest
Propinvest

Sure you have been to Tarneit 1-2 times and development continues . Slum-like ? :) The double storey house close to my street looks like a Mansion and asking price was 1.5 million and when we found out the final price , it went at 1.41 million. So when you say Slum like I am assuming you live in a rich suburb like Toorak OR partially vision impaired ?

tarneitian2023

Going for my 5th property here. If it wasn't good I wouldn't be living here.

wellsr

All those who can't afford a property in the eastern suburbs are barking here like dogs! Tarniet is and will ALWAYS remain a SLUM.

Danstar

So youre saying every suburb outside of the east is a slum? Have you been to some of the eastern suburbs? Other than some nice houses worth over 5 mill; majority of the east have dirty old houses full of dole bludgers house sharing

"Good place to live"

Overall a good area to live, have personally had no issues myself or with the kids, and house prices are going up quite considerably in a short period, which means typically the 'unfriendly people' get pushed out with the rising prices...

Main issues would be the traffic can be bad at times due to multiple main roads having upgrades on them.

"Best place to live , settle and raise family"

This suburb is best for raising kids , with friendly surroundings and good people to meet and greet around with lot of parks and grounds . So far safe from crime and drugs.

Few challenges - Need an additional railway station to ease the commutation / parking issue, Need big town centers / shopping centers with all major brands to support the growing community.

Overall - Safe place to life and integrate with people.

"Safe, quiet, and near everywhere!!!"

We bought a house here in Tarneit last year and so far we are loving it.

PROXIMITY: We have all the shops, schools, GP, dentist, salons, gym, nearby (just inside 5km radius). Tarneit station is 5-10min drive with alternative routes too! Within 30mins, you’re in the CBD. M1 is very accessible.

COMFORT: We live comfortably in a house with 4BR, 2baths and 2-car garage. We have a huge backyard space whenever we want to have some bbq with friends. We can even park extra 2 cars outside. Inside the house, it is spacious and the kids love it!

PEOPLE: Very multicultural! There is a good mix of Indians, Asians, Kiwis. Neighbours are lovely! We are Aussies btw.

SAFETY: Every time we go out, all we see are families, young professional couples and kids. You can see unchained bikes or even lawn mowers in neighbour’s front yard and no one bothers to take them! We have not encountered any bad incidents in the neighbourhood! We feel very safe as we have home security cameras and alarms installed in our house. SAFETY IS AN INVESTMENT. Crimes are everywhere. What Im trying to say is that if you want peace of mind, then buy these home security devices as if youre installing a smoke alarm! Like fire, you don’t know when a crime will spark so better have these security systems and you can live your life without fears!

So far, I have no negative comments about this suburb!

"We love living in Tarneit"

We’ve been here for just over 12 months.
Suburb is safe but busy. Love the city feeling about it, many shops and good quality restaurants and entertainment nearby. Pacific Werribee is a great place for shopping and old Geelong Road has all the shops you could ever ask for. Half an hour to the city or just 26 minutes with the train. Issue is the train is too full but I believe there is a second train station underway. So many recreational places for the kiddos including parks, rivers and child care centres to chose from too. It’s safe and people are mainly families, we’ve never seen any gangs or crime incidents. Of course in any fast growing city especially with so many young families moving in each week and with so many teenagers, there will be some issues but nothing serious.
We love the city feel and milticulturism, it’s really the new/old Australia where all nationalities come together to live peacefully. The data from Sensis is outdated, Tarneit is definitely full of young families moving from either south eastern suburbs or country areas as the house prices are much more affordable. Only downside we have found is the traffic, other than that it’s definitely a good Melbourne suburb where you can create a good family lifestyle. Forgot to mention there are many good schools nearby to choose from.

"Lived near Tarneit my whole life.."

I've always lived in nearby Hoppers Crossing or Werribee, and never really liked Tarneit as I felt it was too new, too cramped and lacked soul. Sure, there are pockets of Tarneit like this, but as Tarneit grows older, the more soul it gains. It's perfect for families with so many parks, walking trails and bike paths. It's very affordable, so you can get a huge house for half the price on the other side of town, and save your money for other fun things in life.

We ended up buying across from the Werribee River, which is probably my favourite spot in the whole of Tarneit. It's very peaceful here and the neighbourhood is great!

I'm not one to buy into a suburb just for its name, so I'm proud to say I live in Tarneit because my family absolutely loves it. I've got friends who live in nice suburbs on the Eastside, and that's great, but for me the affordability to quality of life ratio in Tarneit hits the sweet spot.

I have been living here for the last 14 months and absolutely loving it. Moved here from Adelaide and I was sceptical due to some of the reviews but honestly it's the best place we have lived. After living in Sydney and Adelaide, Tarneit in Melbourne is just so much nicer and the cost is much more affordable. Homely feeling, many different nationalities all friendly with eachother, respect when you walk down the street many nice people who always greet you and make you feel at home. Lots of families with kids playing on the streets and at the parks. The shopping centre nearby is amazing and anything you need really is within 5 kms. We are just behind Coles off Tarneit road and we are also here to stay :)

I've only been here for two years but we are loving it. We moved here from Collingwood due to my husbands work, it's just so different and I never would have thought but I really don't miss the busy Collingwood at all. The parks are great for the kids, big open spaces, plenty of parking at the shops, community is lovely all our neigboors are so friendly, so many shops nearby and we really enjoy all the restaurants at Pacific Werribee. Never seen any crime but I guess you get that anywhere in Melbourne now. Really good value for money as we just purchased a beautiful new double storey home for $700,000. I love my back yard and green grass! We're definetely here to stay and so proud call Tarneit home

"So happy we left"

We purchased a house in Moorookyle estate back in 2011 and lived there for 7 years. At first we were so happy. Lots of families at the parks and friendly neighbours. Over the years it just continued to decline drastically. Moorookyle estate was left unusable by my family as teens would terrorise the club house. We were robbed and on a seperate occasion had people banging on our doors and windows in the middle of the night. We felt very unsafe. We couldn't take our children to the local Mcdonalds because of the amount of teenagers getting in fights and vandalising cars in the intersection in front. Local schools have an excessive amount of children per year level and everything is strictly zoned so you don't get a choice of where to send them. The traffic is also horrendous. Was getting way to hard to get anywhere. Massive difference from when we first moved there. We are so happy we moved. Such a huge difference in lifestyle.

2
davida25

Really? Which McDonalds are you speaking about? I take my teenagers to the local McDonalds every weekend and have never seen any fights or cars vandalised? Was this maybe a one off incident? It would be good to give more information so people know what you are talking about. Thank you.

lachh

I agree. You can feel it is dangerous just by driving around the area but you pay for what you get

Ye please give more information. What on earth are you talking about? Any McDonalds after hours is a place for youngsters but you say vandalism? Ive been here 5 years and never felt unsafe or seen anything unusual. Each for there own. Good luck!

It is a safe community in Tarneit. I have never witnessed this. I have been to Williams Landing McDonalds and seen a few rowdy people but not in Tarneit.

johnseyp

Yes it is a very safe community. Of course there are many young families and some with teenagers here but I have never experienced anything like this anywhere in Tarneit or even felt unsafe. I walk my dogs in the night and people are always pleasant and say hello. Break ins happen in all melbourne suburbs, the city of wyndham is the fastest developing in melbourne and Tarneit is huge, you can travel 38kms and still be in Tarneit. I think there are more chances to get broken into if you live in the newly developed areas with no neighboors.

"A Safe Place To Live"

I have lived with my family in Tarneit for around 12 years and have seen the area change from a small country town to the place it is today. Now it is getting busy and the traffic has increased a lot since we first moved here. I have never once seen an African gang so I can't relate to the people who claim there is a problem here. Tarneit is a multicultural place where everyone gets on well with each other. Lots of Indian families have moved to the area, they are friendly and respectful and I regularly see the guys getting together for a game of cricket. There are great sporting facilities here including the swimming centre and the Rex centre for basketball.

Now Tarneit station is up and running we can get to the city in around 27 minutes and we are just over an hour away from the Great Ocean Road. I am not writing this review to somehow increase the price of my property, this is all based on my genuine experience of living in the area for 12 years.

The downsides would be the traffic and the lack of decent schools in the area. If you are a family considering moving here you will need to pick your school carefully. State primary schools are not too good and a couple of the Catholic primary schools are not good either. My advice would be to look at Bethany or St. James.

When we first came to Melbourne we were over in Malvern on the east side. People told us to avoid the west. They were wrong. We much prefer living here than we did in Malvern.

Good luck, if you are in any doubt, come out here and take a look around, visit the Plaza and get a feel for the people here.

"According to the reviews I live in the nicest part of Tarneit."

Basically the crime is due to petty criminals and bored people. There has been times I have been witness to some petty criminal here, if they step into my property I just give them a mouthful and they generally apologise and never do that again. Was a major rodent plague which was extreme 2 years ago. A few to many cats left out at night. There has not been many times I've felt unsafe although I have felt like there's a ghost or more around the place. Doesn't help there are crosses laid in white rocks in the park making me very suspicious of a Leake family member causing missing items - he hates my fake nose ring for some reason. So yeah, there's ghosts here. I also am near skeleton Creek too, hence where name comes from.
A few bat's and lots of native wildlife and flora, fauna. The trees smell great around now, so pleasing.
I'm not sure what is the problem with multiculturalism, I'm whiter than a normal person lol but I'm not an aboriginal so I can't say or complain about multiculturalism because technically we are all non Australians unless aboriginal so yeah, what's up with the hate? Don't be scared of youths or weird stares from different cultures. We're all new here. Smile and you'll be alright here or anywhere for that fact.

"Easily my 2nd favourite part of Melbourne - 1st would be Williamstown"

My husband & I have lived in Tarneit for 14 years in a townhouse overlooking the creek. We have loved our home and environment. We outfitted our home with multiple cameras and view those from our phones and devices. We also use phone tracking if we walk without the other. So precautions make for a smooth life .There are shopping malls but no shopping towns - which is a pity but we have many things here. The local cafe has a very generous reward system! I lived in the city and Southbank for 10 years, Noble Park for a few, had a lot of dealings with Brunswick, Preston, Reservoir and I can say Tarneit is far better than the outer suburbs mentioned. Home. However, I wouldn't recommend commuting by car from here anywhere East and a downer is we live 3km from the school which means I drive our child to school in the winter. I wish it was closer. The swimming pool situation is terrible here - only one in another suburb where it's standing room only in the pool & the beach is 10km+ away so you'd be best to install your own or risk forgetting how to swim. You need to drive to most establishments out here but I feel our home - if you choose in the right pocket - makes up for that. Set yourself up in your home because you'll spend more time in than out.

"Tarneit - booming suburb!"

Tarneit is multicultural, modern, houses are available on big and small lots, you get what you pay for. Everything is close by, great schools private or goverment, child care, medical centres on every corner, shops, cafes, walking tracks. You really don't miss anything. Yes it is multicultural and all those haters need to move out if they can't handle it. Yes it is a family suburb as you mainly see families living here. A young suburb that has evolved too fast meaning lack of infrastructure and a crowd at the train station but really positives outweigh any slight negatives. This really is the place to be if your after a good family life within half an hour to the city. Crime rate is low compared to other suburbs. I personally have never seen anything after hours, I do live in the older part of Tarneit so I can't talk about every estate as there are over 36,000 residents here but where I live I must say it really is very quiet. Unfortunately prices have skyrocketed in the last 5 years, overall a great suburb which has over 130 people moving into the area each week, this is the fastest growing suburb in Melbourne!

"Love Tarneit"

We live in the older part of Tarneit (off Tarneit road) adjacent to Hoppers Crossing. Have been here around 18 years. Our kids have grown up, lifestyle is good. There have not been any negatives for us, we moved from south eastern suburbs as property here was more affordable at the time. The new train station is great, gets you to the city in 26 minutes. There has been some recent crime in the community centre but unfortunately these gangs are making their marks across Melbourne. I have never felt unsafe or even worried about walking around, people are friendly and there are so many families around. Tarneit has been designed well with many parks and schools which make it a popular choice for young families. There is so much more now than what there was when we first moved here. It has been great watching this suburb emerge from a country style place to a lively city, the only thing I miss is the peace and quiet. It has changed from quiet to extremely busy with all the shopping centres and the roads are so full, traffic has becoming a daily routine. Generally speaking I think its the people that create this vibrant suburb. We have many new migrants, many young families, some oldies (including myself!). If you are looking for a good suburb in Melbourne where everything is within an arms reach then this is a good choice. Hopefully with the increased population the infrastructure will improve. Love Tarneit but miss the peace and quiet!

"Tarneit - A beautiful place to call home!"

I am quite surprised with some of these reviews. Yes unfortunately the crime rate has increased in Melbourne but this is everywhere, not just Tarneit. Older parts of Tarneit with less rental properties have no issues with crime, they are well designed for families and neighbors are friendly, crime rate is low compared to other suburbs. Look up Victorian statistics, crime rates were worst in the inner city and in some regional cities.
In Tarneit we are lucky enough to have it all, schools nearby, shopping centres, walking tracks, great access to city via fast v-line train. Been here 5 years and we love it!

"Amazing suburb to live and work in cbd"

Lot if new estatrs coming up here. . Tarneit has very bright future. The suburb itself is very planned. With lot of big roads and next road expansion project coming in.
Regd crime, where it is not. Check racv and vic gov crime statistics. That make it clear that Tarneit is much safer than other. And i believe that if it has to happen with you, it will be in any part of the world.
Regd cafe, new estates coming with lot of cafe, restaurants and shopping options. Just got new cafe in stockland grove estate. One more coming by next year. Around Davis rd, new coles and many more cafe options in couple of years.
Many more private and public school options for the kids near to the house. We got goodnews, Grange P12 and Westbourne grammer near to our house. For me this is the suburb i was looking for.

"All the houses look the same"

Tarneit is an new area and people are buying here a due to the cheap housing but people don’t think about the surroundings. 1 way to go into the city via princess freeway and if there is one car accident you be stuck for a few hours. Small block of land... all the houses all look a like... crime rates are high... over crowded. Driving around Tarneit anytime is like driving through peak hour traffic every hours.. Tarneit will only be good for investment and not good to live in. If you look at realestate you can see for yourself there are a lot of rental properties listed... if you want to live in a better area around the same distance to Tarneit to city look at Plumpton... look at realestate and there will be no rental properties... properties there are owner occupied... price is plumpton is slightly higher but you get what you pay for. That is my 2cents...

"GREAT SUBURB CLOSE TO THE CITY AND AIRPORT"

Recently moved here from WA. This suburb has everything to offer from great parks near by and great big shopping centres round the corner with heaps of selection. Train station is very central and has heaps of parking for people going to work in the morning, not to mention the easy flowing accesibility in and out of the suburb. This is a very family friendly suburb with lots to do. I am currently in the process of purchasing an established PPOR in the riverdale estate after renting here the last 6 months.

I moved here 2 years ago. All the negative reviews here is not true. Can anyone explain which subrub is crime free. Even you buy 2 million dollars property.this is very affordable and brand new subrub. I love here living with my wife. It's very close to two cities. It's growing very rapidly. This is the best time to move into the market. We moved from Sydney . This subrub is much much better than 1 million subrub in Sydney ( Blacktown). Just try to move to Sydney in Blacktown then you will realise what the meaning of crime. These negative reviews people are talking nonsense.

"Tarneit family suburb"

We are renting a house near Tarneit road, so many shops and parks, pacific werribee nearby, safe for families no issues at all. Clean area with neat tidy houses and lawns, really crime is everywhere in melbourne but I can say after living here for 2 years I have never seen anything unusual. People around are mainly business people working in city or trades people working in local area or laverton, we hope we will have enough for a deposit soon so we can buy here. Community feeling is great and most people are friendly, typical australian suburb.

"A real review."

Most people who review here write false reviews because they are invested in the area. I have lived in the area and could not get out faster. Please do actual data based research and you will see not everything is as rosy as it seems. Tarneit and Truganina are quickly becoming crime and gang dens. Here are crime stats:

From Last Year:
Total crimes are up 26% out of which Robbery is up 290%
Drug Offense is up 33%

You can look this data up yourself here:

Have to say this is correct. A ton of investors leaving glowing reviews to dupe buyers into thinking it's a safe sub to raise their families. You do NOT want your kids growing up in this area, it's like the ghetto/bronx equivalent. Gang & drug related crime is out of control!

Danstar

More population = more
Crime/drug use. That can be said about any suburb

Danstar

Your comments are very uninformed and slandering. Unless you have $1mill+ to move into a eastern suburb, every suburb on outer rims of Melbourne are the same

bingr

Statistics don't always tell us the full truth. There may have been 1 robbery in 1 year and then the following year there were 3. That might be portrayed as crime up by 200% where in fact the crime rate is very low. But hey, don't take my word for it. Come and see for yourself.

And if you dont want to catch a bus to the train station, find a house closer to itpretty stupid to make that a con since every suburb would be the same. There is t a train Station around every corner

Totally agree with you Faisal. Look, the real estate agents are offended with someone writing a REAL review!

I own a house in Truganina and I have rented in South Yarra, Prahran and stkilda. I got punched by junkies that stole my wallet. I walk the pram around the streets and walk paths in Truganina and see other families doing the same, no junkies. Allura is a nice part of Truganina.

"A really good suburb that has its pros and cons like any new suburb!"

Been living in Tarneit for the last 5+ years and really don't have too much negatives to day. The positives sides are - open spaces, multi multiculturalism, lots of Food and Shopping options, Close to a V-line station and overall a calm quite place.

There has been an influx of hoons or negatively influenced kids, but not so much to be concerned. There has been quite a few break-ins around the area, which seemingly is done considering rich occupants have lots of cash lying around.

Problems of a still new suburb I believe.

Overall still happy with the place.

We really love living here! After living in Richmond for many years this was the best thing we ever did after having the kids. Safe, sound, clean, everything within easy reach, parks, walking tracks, childcare, medical centres, shopping centres. There really is no crime, the only thing that you hear of sometimes is newer houses getting break-ins but these are houses that have no neighboors, basically in the middle of nowhere. If you have a family and you want a quality lifestyle move to Tarneit, it really is a fantastic place with a good caring community and friendly hard working people!

"A great place to live!"

We have lived here for the last 4 years and though quite hesitant about the reviews we found trying it ourselves has been great as we have no regrets and are now looking at buying. There are very few negative things about Tarneit, if you don't like multiculturism then you shouldn't be here. The rate of crime is low compared to other suburbs in Melbourne, it is not far from the city and train from Tarneit to CBD is just 26 minutes with only a few stops compared to other areas that are closer but it takes longer. Our street has many young families with kids which is so nice to see them playing together. Big selection of schools and child care centres and shopping centres. Peaceful and quiet place to live. If you buy a house on a new estate with no neighboors then yes there will be break ins but this does not happen in the more populated areas. When you walk down the streets you see mainly families and people enjoying life. We love the parks and being close to the coast and the big shopping centre (Pacific Werribee). We have never felt unsafe here. People are kind and happy to help. This suburb is growing so fast and is getting expensive, we hope to find something soon that we an afford.

I have lived in Tarneit for 7 years at start it was great was peaceful and quiet, weren't many youths roaming around, However ever since 2014 it has completely gone downhill with estates becoming multicultural zones . Although these ethnically diverse neighbourhoods it has become a ground zone for crime and conflict.

"Tab with, my hometown for many years"

I have lived in Tarneit for 12 years.
Prior to that I had lived in Hoppers Crossing (3 years ) and prior to that in Richmond (10 years).

Tarneit and its surrounding areas are growing at a rapid pace . New Estates with the the latest modern homes being built .
I have lost count how many schools in the area but there are many - private and public and religious.

Childcare facilities - there are plenty of them .

Within a 5 klm radius there are 3-4 train stations , 2 Police stations , Council Swim Centre, 5 MacDonalds , 3 Hungry Jacks , 3 KFC , 15+ Petrol stations , 50+ Bulk Billing Doctor clinics that open till 11pm , a hospital and a Central Plaza that is huge and growing with each expansion.
In addition to that , the area has nearly every top 200 Retail franchise outlets . Think of a retailer , it is within 5klm from Tarneit . The area has a huge car sales area with all the common car makes .
The suburb is an area which has the best facilities - there is no other suburb like it . I don't mind being a few klm from the facilities as this gives the area less traffic in my local estate.
Now I am an immigrant , and I believe in Multiculturalism, Tarneit would have people from all over the world . And like all high growth mini cities - there will be issues .
Remember it's the effort we all make that makes our suburb a better place to live .
I do not appreciate people talking about classes and race , we are all the same in God's eyes .

"Tarneit - really is the luck of the draw, try before you buy!"

We moved from Tarneit last week after five years of living on Reflections. Initially it was not too bad but then some owner occupiers moved out and bogan renters moved in and it became a different story. The community spirit was soon gone and replaced with open drug dealing (police don't care) mini motorbikes, remote controlled cars amongst some of the regular nuisances endured. It is a LOW socioeconomic area, which will attract people looking for a cheap rental with little in the way of common respect for other people. Wyndham council admitted to me they are short staffed and cannot stop the idiots who insist on parking across nature strips, not looking after nature strips and making the neighbourhoods look quite third world. On the two occasions I called the police to report domestic violence (get used to it if you move to Tarneit, there is a lot of it) I was almost laughed at, despite this being a topic very prominent in the media. I have friends on Rose Grange who absolutely hate it there, same thing renters, unfortunately as long as their neighbour insists on hanging washing on the weeds in the front garden they know it's useless to try and sell. Try and get on the Vline after 7am, it's a joke. Try and get to the CBD in peak hour, hardly 30 minutes!!! Do yourself a favour and avoid this area like the plague. However if you have a thick skin, don't care about the effects on your family and don't mind all the above then go for it. A future slum in the making, it will be the Broadmeadows of the west before long. Getting out of there has been an extreme relief.

So now we're confused! Please let me know which areas in Tarneit are the best :) thanks!

Seasons Estate is probably the best estate in Tarneit due to the larger blocks, and mainly owner occupiers living there. I would also consider the new estate around the train station. Once the tarneit town centre is completed, it will be great. Good luck with your new baby.

Westbrook or Emerald Park estates in Tarneit will be the best in a few years time due to being right next to new train station, new town centre, and new schools.

We have an 800sq block which is great but don't agree with council allowing developers to produce tiny housing blocks - 300 to 400sq, this is happening in the outer suburbs all around Melbourne and will take from ideal of moving to the outer suburbs for space and will create congestion and possible slum

"Once was a great suburb to live..."

I have lived in Tarneit for four years now, when my family first moved in it was a fantastic area. Quiet, clean, safe and friendly. the last two years the area's quality has gradually gotten worse. Graffiti, vandals, rubbish, bus stops constantly damaged. Hoons. The kids that I have seen that attend the local schools are absolutly feral, this is why I drive my son an hour every day to another suburb for school. I can't wait to leave Tarneit to a more expensive suburb where the crazy ferals that are moving in to Tarneit can not follow. Loved Tarneit at the start but this suburb is going down hill fast.

"Fast-developing Tarneit"

I bought my house in Tarneit (Rose Grange Estate) in 2005 when this place was literally a huge flat barren paddock. I relied on the Melway for most of my research on the suburb and its prospect for growth. Thank God they have implemented almost all the plans they originally proposed!!! I lived in the Eastern suburbs before moving here. Through experience, I would consider Tarneit especially Rose Grange to be one of the best places for family with kids. Tarneit is very cosmopolitan and culturally diverse which makes it a great place to live in. My advice to any prospective home buyer is Do Not Miss Out on owning a house in Tarneit by simply listening to people giving negative feedback about this place... Do the research yourself and weigh the pros and cons and compare it with other suburbs. God Bless!!

Great for

  • Baden Powell College is as good as any private school (my perspective)
  • A proposed shopping centre at the corner of Leakes RD and Derrimut Rd
  • Tarneit will just get better over time
  • New house
  • 30 minutes from city
  • Parksand Recreations and child care centers
  • Plenty of Schools
  • Railway Station under construction

Not great for

  • Criminal activities in the nearby suburbs
  • Lack of beautiful trees and land marks
  • Hoons

"Wouldnt live anywhere else:-)"

I have lived in Tarneit for over two years and love it! The cons everyone talks about are the same in any suburb, exception of lack of infrastructure around public transport and roads, but Tarneit is getting there considering the influx of new residents we are playing catch up.
There are new clubs and shops being built now. So now is the time to buy as soon the prices will rise.

"Tarneit has NO redeeming features"

Moved back to Australia and thought I would build a house in Tarneit. Before doing so decided to rent and see what the suburb was all about. Great big new house....but no back yard to speak of. Lego Land...packed in tight where you can hear your neighbours all of the time. First week in - walk out the front door with my three year old to be confronted with several police cars. Stabbing across the street. Domestic Violence was the norm with our Neighbours to the back - makes for great entertainment christmas day with children and guests....NOT! House near "recreation centre" growing drugs! Which brings me to the recreation centre if you could call it that! People that own in the area did not seem to benefit as those who rented invited their friends in en masse. Horrified by behaviour of locals....racially motivated. Shocking place.

Not great for

  • Lack of infrastructure
  • Very bad traffic and ease of access to city
  • Hoons
  • House and land size
  • Crime rate
  • Neighbours

lucky3

In 2006, the total population of Tarneit was estimated at 7,613 people. It is expected to experience an increase of over 36,100 people to 43,803 by 2021! The area is growing rapidly and of course just like any other area in melbourne or anywhere in the world, there will be domestic violence and drugs. It is definitely not the NORM and we hardly hear of stabbings or drugs!!! As described by most residents it is quiet and peaceful and family orientated, maybe not as peaceful as a country village in the UK................

Abc_easy_as_123

@ lucky 3 do you need to comment and try and defend tarneit with every bad review that is on here. Not all of tarneit is like where you live maybe you should experience the real world and realise all different parts of ONE suburb can be different !!!!!

Danstar

Having a bad neighbour isn't a reflection on the whole suburb....

Land sizes are small in every new estate that is coming up. If you want bigger land, pay the extra money to get it.

PeepooyR

Same here. Moved back to Australia and found my old suburb of Yarraville quite pricey already. Rented a 2 year old house in Tarneit facing a farm that offered me beautiful sunsets. Lovely neighbour too who mowed my lawn for me. BUT no good restaurants nearby. House got broken into within weeks. And the traffic into the city was horrific! Packed up and left the day the lease expired. I hope never to go back!

"Tarneit - Perfect!"

Have been in Tarneit for a year now. We absolutely love it. Can't find any flaws so far at all. We also came from the south eastern side of town. There are so many school options for children. It is a very large suburb but within 5 - 10 minutes there is the Westbourne Grammar, The Good News Lutheran school, Thomas Carr College, Baden Powell College, St James The Apostle, Bethany Primary School and Westgrove Primary School. I am only naming a few of which I know are really good schools but there are many more to choose from. Personally we would love to send the kids to Westbourne but it is extremely pricy. Our kids go to Westgrove and are very happy. Shops are everywhere but the Werribee Plaza and the Tarneit shopping centre would have to be the best choice. The Plaza is being extended so plans are that it will be twice the size soon. Tarneit will have 2 railway stations which are currently under construction. At the moment you can use the Hoppers Train station which is again between 5 - 10 minute drive depending on where you live or you can catch the bus. The roads are being improved and we expect further improvements in the next few years. Our neighboors are lovely, keep to themselves but are quite friendly, not that many rental properties near where we live, close to Hogans Road. We love going bike riding to the river with the kids and the local restaurants on Watton Street are great. There is again so much to choose from: Greek, Italian, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese (to name a few) and some great steak and pub meals at the aussie restaurants. The marina is also under construction and there will a ferry to the city, another exciting project. We are close to some of melbourne's best tourist spots, the great ocean road, the werribee mansion, the open range zoo, the river, the coast and the list goes on... I agree with most of the other reviews, overall its a great place to raise a family.

"Great place to live in the Older areas"

Tarneit is quite a large suburb, There's the city side which is closer to Morris Rd and then there is the back side beyond Tarneit Rd.
Currently from the east to the west side of Tarneit can be around 10 min by Car. The older parts of the suburb now have a bit more infrastructure, plenty of schools, places for take out dinners, food shopping etc. As for the newer parts I gather that is all still in development. My neighbours are nice and tend to help each other as there are less renters in the older parts of Tarneit. Overall I quite happy living here and its great to know that if we ever have kids Westbourne collage and Thomas Carr Collage would be my first options. A new police station was built a little over a year ago on the corner of Derimut and Sayers roads opposite the BP service station which is handy. A great place to live:) Also the Older parts generally have larger blocks as well which is nice.

"Living the dream"

We love tarneit, been here for a year now. Built our own home, not big but an average size. We have nice neighboors and we are really enjoying the community spirit and friendliness of people. The crime rate is really low if compared with other areas, we came from Richmond so definitely much lower here. Have not heard of anyone on our street who has been broken into, there are many new houses going up on un-occupied land so I guess when its really quiet and there are no neighboors, you will get some break ins. We are loving it, plan on going nowhere for the next 50 years! Great shopping and parks for kids, average people and some really wealthy ones, the area is getting really expensive

"Cant wait for our house to sell"

We brought in Tarneit 6 months ago and have had nothing but problems. We have been broken in to twice and our car has been broken in to once.
The neighbours are always loud and are having parties every second day and it goes on for hours.
We have had their friends blocking our drive way and wont let us out. Police was called they told us nothing we can do.
We brought in Tarneit thinking it will be great to have a new home as we were expecting and didn't want to be renting while our child would be growing up.
But after all this i think i would much rather be renting then owning and living in this house.
You cant go away for the weekend or we come back to having our bins gone through or your house broken in too.

If you love to be claiming on insurence all the time and not having access to your drive way and living in a dog box with no back yard.
please feel free to come and join us at Tarneit. I can't wait until this house then someone else can have MY problems while i go back to renting!

"A great place to raise a family"

We have been in Tarneit since it first started evolving, about 11 years now. During that time we have seen it progress to a lovely suburb, quiet, tidy with lovely new houses and family orientated people. Not suitable if you want to be close to pubs and clubs however there are many accessible restaurants nearby on Watton Street and Point Cook. The coast is easily accessible and so is the city. Great for families, good community and lovely neighbours, we have never had any problems. Good choice of schools and nearby shops. Real estate has doubled in value in the past 10 years and we will have two train stations and freeway even closer with new plans. If you are are after a good size block and a peaceful family life in a clean new suburb, this is the place to be!

Im just wondering if you are in a older style home in Tarneit?? Good size blocks? Im sorry are you kidding? 400m2 or 500m2 is good? It is tiny once you add the house then the back yard is next too nothing. You cant even fit a swimming pool in. If you want to you would want to have no back yard at all.
For new houses that are going for 400k to 500k which some are in Tarneit that are on 700m2. Not much room at all to move compaired to the older style homes.!
Also you say pros are child-care centres there is only like 2-3 child care centres and one of them is Sunkids which i would never recommend!
I think this area is good if you love to be woken up by your neighbours because you can hear everything they are saying in their own home or you can hear their loud bass music! The homes are lovely yes neighbours not so and also what these new homes are made out of is just crap! You shouldnt hear every little thing in a brand new home that is made out of Bricks.

* Please dont think im having a go at you but really the tarneit area has sadly gone a little down hill and is getting over ran by other people which dont make it all that family friend*

lucky3

Sad to hear that you feel that way about Tarneit. We are just going by our personal experience and we have never had any loud neighbours! Yes we built our home 11 years ago and our block and home is much larger than what is on offer today however if you compare the homes in tarneit with other new areas e.g caroline springs, point cook, etc you will find that the blocks in Tarneit are still bigger. In regards to the quality of the walls, I can't comment because we have not had that problem. As Tarneit is so close to hoppers and werribee there is an abundant choice of child care centres within a 5 minute drive and the same applies for schools but I guess if you need a child care centre within walking distance, then that would be hard to find. We have raised our children here and been lucky enough to have had a good run, I guess as the area gets bigger and the population expands we will need more child care centres. We live on a quiet court where all the kids go out to play cricket on the street when its sunny and the neighbours get together for a few glasses wine so can't complain. Life is good :)

angelboy

we are thinking of moving into this area next year we are on the gold coast coast atm but come from melbourne I thought it looked like a good area compared too other areas lucky 3 would love to live in your area sound like what we are looking for have 2 kids that love cricket .Does anyone know when the new school will be built and if it will be primary and secondry cheers

"Living in Moorookyle (owner occupied)"

I have been living in Moorookyle Estate for the past 2 years. And I have no problems and loving it. My kids love to play in the parks next to the Country Club. I have noticed the back estate, Heartlands have been developed, making it easy access to Leakes Rd via The Rise Estate. There is a proposed School behind Moorookyle Estate. I am looking forward to it. Like in any part of Melbourne there are always some bad stories..but you can't punish the whole estate based on a few bad experiences. " 6. theft will only happen to those who leave things around for easy access maybe istal cameras or higer fence would be smart. "

Why should you have to install cameras or a higher fence?? Too feel safe and so your stuff doesn't get stolen? Putting that in a review is agreeing with other posters that yes it is a high crime rate area.. Also you say it only happens to people that leave stuff around. Hmm im pretty sure out of 99% of the break ins around tarneit are not cause by that. I don't see people having all their valuebles at their front windows with a sign saying take me. The reason why it is a high crime area is
1. The Estate are not always finished when people move in.
2. The Estates that offer security well i wouldn't even call it that because its non existent.
3. The target peoples homes because they know that the owners or renter would be out working full time because paying for the house.
4. 60% of the time its people that live in your street that break in because they have nothing better to do expect sit on the bottoms all day and don't work for a living and get their home given to them from soical services.

I would have to highly DISAGREE! I live in the Moorakyle Estate and it is very quiet in my area, neighbours are friendly and we have had no trouble with red backs, i have not spotted any pot holes and never seen a house completed in 1-2 months!

Abc_easy_as_123

Will and Sarah S- I own in Moorokyle estate and i must say Yes their is Redbacks i had them in my investment properties. It may be quite where you live but i can tell you where my rental properties are it is loud. The crime rate in moorokyle is a lot higher then any other estate in Tarneit.
Also yes there is potholes due to the roads getting fixed up! You also say that you have seen a house completed in 1-2 months will sorry to spoil it but my property is living proof that they go up quick one of my investments was completed in 5-6 weeks.
I have to agree with what you wrote Ryaz11. Im looking at selling my investment properties and buying in point cook as the housing is alot better. I have had nothing but problems with my 2 investment properties.
I guess we all have houses in different parts of Moorokyle. You 2 are just lucky you have the "good" part of moorokyle

New houses being built in 1-2 months isn't a reflection on the suburb, thats the builders.

Tarneit! I have been living here since 2 years now and have fallen in LOVE!
Beautiful Walk Ways
Bike tracks
Ample of parking on street and in shopping centers
Very safe for family (We are a young couple living with 2 senior citizens, they love meeting our neighboring families during the walk at the park)
Some of the parks are very scenic specially the lake at reflections blvd, must visit!
Very friendly neighborhood.
We have heard a lot of news about burglary but none has been witnessed in our neighborhood, fortunately! The African families in our area are very friendly as well, they always say hello with a lovely smile! :)
The house prices are on increase. The local community on facebook are really helpful.
The library is good.
I am unsure about the schools as we dont have kids, but our neighbor's 3 kids love their P9 school.
We have many neighbors who are in various trades, they have been great help whenever some work is required in our house. (electricians, carpenters, packers and movers etc)
Very calm and well maintained streets except a few houses who needs to maintain their front yards!
We have been living in south east before moving to tarneit, but I love living here now. Very peaceful and so close to city & beaches for that weekend spree.
Looking forward for the future stations and road upgrades.

"Tarneit is great place to live (except Moorokyle Estate)"

Tarneit is a good place to live if you have a family and you are after affordable place to live. There are bit of peak hour traffic problems, but that issue is no different to any other Melbourne suburb. Off peak time, it's a smooth 30 minute drive to city.

There are plenty of good schools around like Good News Lutheran School, The Grange P-12 College, St James the Apostle Primary School and Baden Powell College.

Tarneit overall has a family area feel to it, with nice parks and housing in every estate.

The only estate that is known to have some trouble is the Moorokyle Estate in Tarneit. You will find a very high percentage of houses in Moorokyle estate being put of for sale or rent as compared to other estates. Moorookyle Country Club is known to attract nonsense & regular fights among teens.

The nearby estates like Tarneit Gardens and The Rise estates are heaps better. I have recently moved from away from Moorokyle estate to The Rise estate which is also serviced by Bus route 442. Recent upgrades to Leakes road has eased traffic on Sayers Road and it is easy to commute to city by Leakes Road.

I reckon tarneit is the place to buy your own home. You will see a steady increase in the house prices. But I would not recommend investing because there is already more than required properties up for rent which is causing high vacancy rate and rental discounts.

Im in the moorokyle estate and find the street im in is ok. Depends if you like all your neighbours living in garages. A high population or maoris that live in there garage. they convert it into lounge rooms/kitchens. Witch does get to be annoying when your house is pretty much ontop of them. like most houses here.

We stay away from the country club as its full of weridos.
We cant wait untill we move out of here..

Just thinking to construct a house in The Rise Estate. How's the Estate ? is it safe and secure specifically in night time ?how's overall community around ? is it really worth to live in "The Rise estate" ?
